Now that Marvel has shown how to make a massive but unified cinematic superhero universe, everybody wants to get in the game. While Sony is ready to churn out Spider-Man movies and spin-offs, Fox is finally ready to do the same with X-Men. First on their wishlist? Solo films for Mystique, Gambit and Deadpool.
Here's X-producer Lauren Shuler Donner, speaking with Entertainment Weekly:
"There was a regime [at the studio] that didn't see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we're going to do right by it. I'd like to do Gambit. I'd like to do Deadpool. We'll see. There's a lot of really great characters."
With shapeshifter Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) taking a pivotal role in Past's plot, Donner says she'd be interested in taking that character into a solo film.
First of all, if you have the opportunity to make any superhero film right now, you do it. That's money in the bank. If one of those superheroes can be played by Jennifer Lawrence, thatt's even better. Second, it's hilarious that the old Fox regime didn't see the potential in X-Men spin-offs beyond Wolverine, but then again, they also thought this was a good idea, so it's also kind of amazing they didn't drown while taking a shower.
