Alejandro Jodorowsky's Dune was an incredibly ambitious project, one that, had he gotten his way, would have included music by Pink Floyd, designs by Moebius and HR Giger, and Salvador Dali, Orson Welles, and Gloria Swanson in the cast. Although the movie never came to fruition, this first clip of the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune offers some idea of what the director had in mind. More »

The beautiful 11 x 15 inch watercolor painting by John Schoenherr, used for the ACE paperback first edition of Dune, just sold for a little over $26,000 at Heritage Auction Galleries, shattering the $10,000 to $15,000 pre-auction estimate. Internet bidders pushed the price to just over $19,000 prior to the live segment of the auction, which saw the bidding for the painting reach $26,290. The painting was also used for the 25th Anniversary paperback edition of the Frank Herbert classic that created an enduring sci-fi universe. More »

Science fiction's greatest authors have brilliant ideas, storytelling mojo... and plenty of stubbornness. Many of the field's greatest writers were buried in rejection slips, before they finally broke in. Here are 15 classic novels that publishers didn't want to touch. More »

R.I.P. Ralph Vicinanza, the agent who brought SF's greatest authors to a foreign audience

Ralph Vicinanza, a literary agent who specialized in foreign rights, died suddenly at his home on Saturday. For two decades, he represented such high-powered authors as Stephen King, Philip K. Dick, Carl Sagan, Robert A. Heinlein, George R.R. Martin, Terry Pratchett and Kim Stanley Robinson, primarily in overseas deals. In 1998, Vicinanza formed Created By, an L.A.-based production/management company that works mostly with science fiction. Frederik Pohl's always fascinating blog features an article about his friendship with Frank Herbert and the genesis of Dune. Every book publisher turned down Herbert's manuscript, until a small press took a chance. Inspired by the late Frank Herbert's birthday yesterday, io9 pal Joshua Glenn posted an interesting meditation on the awesomeness of Dune over on Hilobrow. One of the great science fiction films never made is Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Dune. In 1975, the playwright and director started work on an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s masterwork, which was to star the likes of Orson Welles, Salvador Dali, and Mick Jagger, use designs by H.R. Giger, and feature a soundtrack by Pink Floyd. Eventually the project was killed by lack of funds, but concept art by Jean “Moebius” Giraud offers a glimpse into what could have been. More »

The Islam And Science Fiction website is addictive reading, mostly because it shows how many different ways non-Muslim writers have portrayed Islam in SF works. I already knew that Dune borrows tons of ideas from Islam, but I'd forgotten that Philip K. Dick's Eye In The Sky used a fundamentalist Islamic world to reflect paranoia about McCarthyism and Communist hysteria. (In a few works, Islam seems to be the "safe" other to project an author's fears of oppression onto.) But since 9/11, portrayals of Islam have actually become more sympathetic in novels such as Charles Stross' Accelerando and Brian Aldiss' Harm. [Islam In Science Fiction] More »

Are you ashamed of your size? You should be! Compared to Ego The Living Planet or Unicron the planet who turns into a giant robot, you're not only puny and tiny, you're kind of dumb as well. If there's one thing that science fiction teaches us, it's that you need a sun-sized brain to think truly cosmic thoughts. (And to eat other planets for lunch, too.) But which life form in scifi is the hugest (and therefore the smartest)? We've got the answer. More »
