Fox has unleashed fans on the face of Gort, Klaatu's robot bodyguard from The Day The Earth Stood Still. The studio asked artists and enthusiasts to dream up what the giant robot guardian would have looked if they'd had a say in the remake. Apparently a lot of them wanted him to look like the Silver Surfer mixed with Ork blood. We've grabbed a few pics of the different ideas, and made a Gort gallery for your enjoyment. More »

We almost had a Gort who looked like a new-style Battlestar Galactica centurion, in the Day The Earth Stood Still remake. This is an early piece of Gort concept art, posted by artist Lorin Wood. In the end, of course, we ended up with a CGI Gort that's based much more closely on the original version. But the more sleek, cylon-esque model looks kind of cool as well. The new remake of the 1951 classic The Day The Earth Stood Still looks much darker and a lot more armageddon-esque with expansive CGI chaos scenes and military chase sequences. It looks like Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) is a little late with the phrase "Gort, Klaatu barada nikto," as stadiums crumble and destruction ensues, most likely from silver visor-bot Gort. While we're out here at WonderCon, patrolling the halls of fandom and looking for good science fiction action, there's a piece of super-sized memorabilia on eBay that you might want to pick up: a full-sized replica of Gort from The Day The Earth Stood Still. It was created by Fred Barton Productions ("Celebrity Robots Brought To Life!") and although it's a local pickup only in the San Francisco area, the thing is already up to over four thousand bucks. Our favorite line from the auction is, "Although the controller is included, the robot hasn't been activated in years. It's unknown if it's in working condition."
