First it was the Crypt Keeper, then vampires and dragons — and now HBO is getting into the alien business. The next big series from HBO could be a first contact series called The Spark.
HBO has hired the Last Resort producer, and co-writer of the Oblivion script, Karl Gajdusek, to spearhead its new alien series. Deadline describes The Spark as:
"set in a world undergoing a technological/industrial revolution in the near future when contacted by a signal from beyond the solar system. It centers on the human reaction to a mystery still spiritually and technologically out of reach and follows a female protagonist as she works on the cusp of the Earth’s effort to discover the origin of the signal."
Gajdusek will write and executive produce the show, which we're actually pretty excited about. Even though Last Resort couldn't find its audience, the writing was clever. And fingers crossed this future world is as sleek looking as Oblivion, but without the boredom.
Deadline adds that HBO is attempting to hit all the "pillars" of alien storytelling, including "Alien Contact, Artificial Intelligence, Technological breakthroughs, Space Exploration/Adventure, and Origin Stories." Which is just a shit load of tropes. Maybe just focus on one and make it great, for now. Either way this opens the door wide open for alien sex scenes. What? It's HBO!
