CERN's research director promises we will know the truth about the Higgs boson by the end of 2012. More »

This morning, physicists representing the Large Hadron Collider's two largest experiments — ATLAS and CMS — announced that both teams have independently uncovered signals that point to the appearance of the Higgs boson. The Large Hadron Collider has just announced results strongly suggesting a potential detection of the Higgs Boson at approximately 135 times the mass of the proton. While this doesn't quite count as discovery yet, many physicists (including our own Dave Goldberg) are getting pretty confident that the Higgs is real, and that we now know what it looks like. In tomorrow's "Ask a Physicist" column, we'll do a Higgs roundup, taking your questions about the Higgs Boson, the Higgs Mechanism, and the Standard Model and answering as many of them as possible. Feel free to post your questions and comments here, or email Dave at askaphysicist@io9.com. <a href="http://io9.com/5867650/do-you-have-questions-about-the-higgs-boson-discovery-ask-a-physicist" title="Click here to read more about Do you have questions about the Higgs Boson discovery? One of the two research teams at Fermilab has been on the trail of a new subatomic particle for months, and they're almost certain they've found it. But the other research team has just checked the data...and they've found nothing. More »

Back in April, Fermilab physicists detected a strange bump in their data that couldn't be explained by any known particles. The mystery remains unsolved, and it's looking more and more likely that we're on the verge of a major discovery. More »

CERN may not have discovered the "God particle," but these photos of the facility by engineer Ricardo Hurtubia are almost enough to inspire religious levels of awe. The search is on for the Higgs boson, and it seems likely that soon we'll find this mysterious particle that creates matter in the universe. But what if we don't? In this week's "Ask a Physicist," we'll find out. More »

The Higgs boson is the missing particle that would complete the standard model of particle physics, but so far we've found little to even suggest it actually exists. But a new finding might just have come from a decaying Higgs. More »

You may think physics has changed over the past 200 years, but it hasn't. Today, theoretical physicists can't understand why the universe is expanding at an observed rate that doesn't quite mesh with general relativity. Back in the 19th century, theoretical physicists couldn't understand how electromagnetic energy and gravity could propagate through empty space. The proposed solution in both cases was the same: there must some stuff out there that we can't see, yet affects the entire universe. In the past, that substance was aether. Is today's dark energy the modern equivalent? More »
