The Beasts of the Southern Wild is very much one of the most buzzed films at Sundance right now. Everyone either loves it or respects it greatly. Whether or not this movie about a young girl facing a flood and terrible hog-monsters catches on with a wider audience remains to be seen — but I feel confident saying that he is a sincere new talent on the scene and that this is in a fresh, exciting film floating up from what feels like another world. More »

Siberia enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the coldest places on Earth. But the last time the planet got really cold, Siberia apparently didn't go along for the ride, providing animals a warm oasis from the Ice Age. More »

The Ice Age can be explained by some well-placed specks of iron. Adding dust to the waters around Antarctica can supercharge plankton growth, causing global temperature drops. To stop climate change, we need a whole lot of iron filings. More »

Several thousand years from now, sheets of ice will cover most of the globe, plunging the Earth into a semi-permanent ice age. At least, that was Mother Nature’s plan. But a new study suggests that global warming caused by carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere may have staved off the most extreme ice age the world has ever seen. Unfortunately, climatologists warn, that isn’t exactly a good thing. More »

If only the rest of 2002's The Time Machine had been like this sequence, it would have been one of the greatest science fiction movies ever. A future attempt to colonize and mine the moon instead leads to the near-total destruction of all life on Earth, as the broken moon rains chunks of rock onto Earth. Supposedly this scene would have been much longer and more intense, but director Simon Wells (H.G.'s great grandson) feared invoking comparisons to 9/11. It leads to one of the most interesting plot twists ever. More »
