There's only one thing we know for sure about the future: It'll be weird, and you can't really prepare for it. Just imagine trying to tell someone in 2000 how to prepare for life in 2011. But luckily, there's one surefire way to brace yourself for another round of future shock: by reading a slew of great satires, about people trapped in weird and incomprehensible worlds. More »

Did David Foster Wallace's death make an Infinite Jest movie more likely? It turns out Foster Wallace was working on the script for a movie adaptation as recently as last year, along with Sam Jones, who made the Wilco documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. Filmsite Chud is speculating that all of the attention Foster Wallace is getting, thanks to his glowing obits, could jumpstart the movie. I actually think it could work quite well as a film, if you reimagined it as a sort of absurdist spy comedy about tennis. David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest was the best science fiction novel I read in the 1990s, and remains one of the best novels I've ever read in the genre. The story of a future dystopia where entertainment has finally become so addictive as to be lethal, Infinite Jest was brilliant and morbid, with a bizarre suicide at its core. So maybe it's not that surprising that David Foster Wallace took his own life this weekend. I've been waiting a dozen years for Foster Wallace's next novel, and now it looks like we're all out of luck. Infinite Jest spoilers ahead. More »
