Sometimes it seems like science fiction, and especially fantasy, are genres that lend themselves exclusively to trilogies and long-running series. But some of the greatest writers in speculative fiction have only written standalone novels, not series or trilogies. More »

Artist Dennis Oppenheim's "Whirlpool" project, from the summer of 1973, sought to create an artificial tornado on the bed of a dry desert lake in Southern California. Back in May of 2009, we predicted that Christian Bale and The Machinist's Brad Anderson would be teaming up again to bring J.G. Ballard's Concrete Island to life. Looks like that film is finally moving forward, according to various online reports. So, who's ready to see Bale lose his mind, a ton of weight, and eat his own car? <a href="http://io9.com/5756149/christian-bale-is-ready-to-go-insane-on-jg-ballards-concrete-island" title="Click here to read more about Christian Bale is ready to go insane on J.G. Vincenzo Natali's Splice might be the most daring, bizarre movie of the year. But he's not aiming low for his next projects: He told us he wants to film J.G. The alien aesthetic of 1950s scifi artist Richard Powers evokes melting clocks, Bruegel-like landscapes, and the surrealism of Paul Klee. China Miéville's indispensible review of J.G. Ballard's newly released complete stories does more than celebrate Ballard, whose influence permeates all types of fiction.
