Earlier this year, science fiction writer Jason Stoddard wrote a manifesto calling for “positive” science fiction that's optimistic about the future and features protagonists who can effect real change. The manifesto started a debate about whether positive science fiction could create compelling stories. Stoddard’s latest short story “Willpower” is his attempt to prove his point with a tale of a post-scarcity future, a down-on-his-luck gamer, and a mission to Mars. More »

Jason Stoddard was one of the originators of this whole "science fiction should be more happy" meme, and now he's posted a manifesto about it. Twenty Epics co-editor David Moles summarizes it as "The problem with contemporary science fiction is that it doesn’t love capitalism enough." (To quote Stoddard, "Why can’t we include characters who are captains of industry, or brilliant scientists, or even trust fund babies bent on doing good?") This week, in particular, seems like weird timing for a rant about why we need more positive depictions of "captains of industry" making the world a better place. But maybe I'm not taking the long enough view.
