Sometimes it seems like science fiction, and especially fantasy, are genres that lend themselves exclusively to trilogies and long-running series. But some of the greatest writers in speculative fiction have only written standalone novels, not series or trilogies. More »

There's only one thing we know for sure about the future: It'll be weird, and you can't really prepare for it. Just imagine trying to tell someone in 2000 how to prepare for life in 2011. But luckily, there's one surefire way to brace yourself for another round of future shock: by reading a slew of great satires, about people trapped in weird and incomprehensible worlds. More »

Kraftwerk's 1977 single "The Robots" is anchored in 1930s ideas of futurism - both Soviet and Nazi - and it illuminates something about our relationship with artificial life forms, argues blogger Justin E.H. Smith. More »

Today is the 70th anniversary of science fiction on television. On Feb. 11, 1938, the BBC broadcast its adaptation of a section of the Karel Capek play R.U.R., about androids that rise up against their human creators. Capek's play is the origin of the word "robot," which comes from the Slovak work "robota," meaning work.
