The pulp science fiction renaissance has begun. Edgar Rice Burroughs and E.E. "Doc" Smith both have Hollywood blockbusters in the pipeline. The Burroughs-inspired Avatar broke DVD sales records. But can today's creators update pulp storylines without including the cultural baggage? More »

There's only one thing Hollywood loves than a movie based on a toy: remakes. Dozens of science-fiction classics are slated for do-overs. But instead of remaking films that were fine the first time, here are 20 books Hollywood should film. More »

Welcome back to Ask a Biogeek, a column where biology researcher Terry Johnson answers questions about biology — no matter how weird. Back when I discussed our unlikeliest futures as a species, one commenter added to the list of improbabilities our eventual transcendence into a non-corporeal form. That's hardly the only evolutionary myth propagated by science fiction. Misunderstandings of basic evolutionary theory are often so egregious they make "hearing explosions in space" seem mild in comparison. Warning: In discussing a few of the worst and most common offenses against evolutionary common sense, I'm going to spoil the hell out of a lot of old science fiction. More »

You might be familiar with E.E. Smith's Lensman novels, but you've probably never played the 1969 classic Lensman wargame. Out of print since the 70s, copies of the original Lensman game are so rare they're hard to find even on ebay. Now, original designer Phil Pritchard is overhauling the game for re-release, hopefully later this year. Here's why Lensman's retro charm is still shining after all these years. More »
