The story of an author meeting his own fictional characters is a common one — and usually it becomes some kind of metafictional meditation on the nature of authorship and what it means to be a fictional character. But what if that fictional character comes from a weird post-apocalyptic world, and it was kind of a shitty story? More »

Several years ago, I was getting burned out in my high-stress newspaper job, and I came across a fancy hardcover book listing science fiction publishers, agents and editors. I paged through it on my lunchbreak, until I found a part of the introduction which proclaimed: "Many writers now make a decent living just from writing science fiction short stories." More »

The New York Review of Science Fiction has been a major source of insights into science fiction writing and criticism since 1988, with Hugo nominations every year since 1989. (Among many other fine essays, they published Samuel Delany's essay on racism and science fiction.) Now the Review may be converting to an electronic-only publication, for involuntary reasons. According to an announcement from the editors a couple days ago, the Review's printers, Odyssey Press, were sold, and the printer subsequently "ran out of paper." More »

You can't really be a fully fledged sexist prat without also being kind of a bad scientist. The science supporting the idea that women are less rational than men is looking flimsier all the time. So it's probably not a surprise that the outrageously sexist science fiction story that blew up the Internet, "Womanspace", is bad science as well as bad gender politics. More »

Technology is changing how you read and write everything — but short fiction is at the center of the technological vortex of change. At Worldcon, we attended a panel about the future of short fiction, and learned just how the world of short stories is changing. More »

Kelly Link's latest short story sneaks up on you — at first you think it's just a concentrated dose of weirdness, a jarring head-trip like being suspended by your ankles over the ocean. The task of defining "steampunk" has become surprisingly difficult. Wildly differing definitions are currently in use, from the strictly traditional (late 19th century London-based alternate history science fiction) to the Lewis Carrollian (steampunk means whatever a person wants it to mean). More »

Time Magazine is putting all of its old content online — including an article from 1939 about fans of science fiction, or "pseudo-scientifics," as Time insists on calling it. (At one point, they even refer to an SF writer as a "pseudo-fictioneer." If you want to see why so many science fiction writers and readers have an inferiority complex, look no further than this hilariously sneering article. Terra was the most important postwar science fiction magazine in West Germany — and its covers were bursting with strange monsters and weird struggles in outer space. The Monster Brains blog has gathered some of the greatest monster-focused covers. More »

Most long-time science fiction fans consider the Golden Age to have started with the July 1939 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. That issue contained Isaac Asimov's first Astounding story ("Trends") as well as A.E. Van Vogt's first story, "Black Destroyer." More »

Sometimes the best short stories are the ones which hint at a much larger picture, almost as if they're a window onto one person's experience of a grand saga. That's what Sigrid Ellis' "No Return Address" is like. More »
