The science of dendrochronology observes changes in the pattern of tree rings in an attempt to create a time line and infer climate changes. Using tree ring data, it is possible to link the past <a href="http://www.arts.cornell.edu/dendro/ajatext.html">11,000</a> years in parts of Germany & Northern Ireland, but only the past few centuries in other parts of the world. <!-- %JUMP:More &raquo;% --> <a href="http://io9.com/5883141/using-tree-rings-to-determine-the-start-of-the-medieval-dark-ages" title="Click here to read more about Using Tree Rings to Determine the Start of the Medieval Dark Ages">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Public health initiatives have been a major benefit of living in the 20th and 21st centuries. They've spared many of us from terrible communicable diseases, ensured we live past childhood, and helped cause human life expectancy to increase by 18 years worldwide in the past 50 years alone. <a href="http://io9.com/5845897/the-earliest-public-health-initiatives-included-innoculation-via-scabs-and-sea+sponge-toilet-paper" title="Click here to read more about The earliest public health initiatives included inoculation via scabs and sea-sponge toilet paper">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

With Vikings vs. aliens movie <em><a href="http://www.io9.com/tag/Outlander">Outlander</a></em> rocking our gauntlets in theaters, it's time to take stock of the long and glorious history of science fiction set in the Middle Ages. We've got a list, gentlefolk. <a href="http://io9.com/5140382/science-fiction-that-gets-medieval-on-your-ass" title="Click here to read more about Science Fiction That Gets Medieval on Your Ass">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Ever wanted to carry a laser gun back in time to the Dark Ages and have everyone worship you as some sort of demigod before they eventually overthrow your ass and toss you down a well? Well, now you can. Ascaron Entertainment is releasing the role-playing game <em>Hard To Be A God</em> in April, and it's probably exactly what you'd get if you crossed <em>Star Wars</em> with <em>World of Warcraft</em>. <a href="http://io9.com/349997/smite-primitive-screwheads-with-your-laser-gun" title="Click here to read more about Smite Primitive Screwheads With Your Laser Gun">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>
