Last week, a swelling solar storm on the surface of the Sun sent a stream of charged particles hurtling toward Earth, making for beautiful northern lights in the planet's extreme latitudes. But late last night, at 10:59 p.m. EST, the now massive tempest unleashed an eruption that scientists expect will be responsible for Earth's largest solar radiation storm since 2005. More »

Feast your eyes on one of the most puzzling planetary mysteries our solar system has to offer. In this photograph of Saturn's north pole, captured by NASA's Cassini spacecraft in 2009, clouds can be seen encircling the planet at about 77 degrees north latitude. Even at such a high parallel, the massive six-sided jet stream has a diameter more than twice that of Earth's. More »

Residents of Venezuela have been treated to a light show that has been going on for thousands of years. One spot on the Catatumbo River gets, regularly, forty thousand bolts every night. The lightning has helped sailors navigate, foiled attacks on the nearby countryside, and is actually responsible for Venezuelan independence. Find out about the most zapped spot on earth. More »

A few glider pilots have figured out a way to ride on the clouds moving over the Australian countryside, going 35 miles per hour with no power whatsoever. More »

A newly-discovered cloud formation, first identified last year, has appeared again this week after a massive storm over Missouri. The clouds, called "Undulatus asperatus," create a roiling, churned pattern that looks almost like the wake from a ship. More »

A group of scientists met at the California Institute of Technology last week to discuss what would happen if recent storms in California - pictured here - were to continue for weeks instead of days. It's happened before. More »

Over the past week, extremely weird things have been falling from the sky in Asia. Mega-hail destroyed almost 10,000 homes in China, while dead animals have been raining from the clouds in Japan (pictured: tadpoles on a car). More »

When summer hits the south pole on Mars, only half the ice on the pole melts. This leaves behind a strangely off-center chunk of water-and-carbon-dioxide ice, as you can see in this composite satellite image of the pole in summer. After analyzing climate data for several years, researchers have figured out what causes this weird pattern. It all has to do with winds coming off a gigantic crater, Hellas Basin, far to the north. More »
