There are many problems with Richard "Donnie Darko" Kelly's movie Southland Tales: It's a rambling, paranoid tale of time travel that feels like an homage to bad Philip K. Dick novels. But it's also filled with moments of real brilliance, like this scene where a semi-brainwashed, Republican action movie star played by the Rock pitches his idea for a science fiction cop movie. His girlfriend, an anti-government porn star and internet celebrity, is played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. You never saw her in Buffy like this. If you're ever going to watch Southland Tales, now is the time — released in 2006, it's about the 2008 election.
