The fjords of Norway and the rugged coasts of the Patagonia region of Argentina are quite literally on opposite ends of the Earth, separated by thousands of miles and multiple hemispheres. On the Norwegian archipelago of Spitsbergen you can find Pyramiden, an abandoned mining town that's been almost entirely uninhabited since 1998. Founded in 1910, his town of 1,000 was a model Soviet outpost. That is, until the fall of Communism made it a less desirable place to live. Here's a recent news report from Russia Today, and you can see tourist footage of the town here. More »

Plankton are tiny all by their lonesome, but every summer these tiny marine organisms take over the Barents Sea north of Norway. On August 14, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA's Aqua satellite captured this giant bloom stretching several hundred kilometers over the Scandinavian Peninsula. More »

These incandescent pictures and postcards from the turn of the 19th century aren't true color photography — they were colored using a process known as photochrom that gave the landscapes they depict a fuzzy warm veneer. More »

One of Copenhagen-based architecture/design team BIG's newest projects is this awesome hotel and apartment complex designed specifically for hard core skiiers in Norway. It's built in layers along the natural slant of the mountain so that residents and guests can ski in and out no matter what floor they're staying on.
