Samuel Youd, who died yesterday at age 89, was better known under the name John Christopher, one of several pseudonyms. And under that name, he was best known for creating the fearsome Tripods, alien invaders who enslave the human race with the mind-controlling "cap." Christopher's Tripod trilogy is a wonderful adventure story, but it's also a direct precursor to our current flood of young-adult post-apocalyptic/dystopian novels. He also wrote the ground-breaking eco-apocalypse novel The Death of Grass. The Guardian has a fantastic tribute to an influential, fascinating author who will be greatly missed. <a href="http://io9.com/5883071/rip-john-christopher-the-man-who-filled-our-young-minds-with-awesome-dread" title="Click here to read more about R.I.P. Joe Simon is a comics legend, for his role in creating the iconic superhero Captain America alone. But in recent years, many of us have gained a new appreciation for all his other great work with seminal artist Jack Kirby. He also co-created the 1940s version of the Sandman, plus some other great Golden Age superheroes like The Fly, the Fighting American, the Stuntman, and many others. Titan Books has done some great massive hardcover collections of Simon's writing and Kirby's art, and we featured a selection from one of them a while back. <a href="http://io9.com/5868505/rip-joe-simon-co+creator-of-captain-america-and-countless-other-heroes" title="Click here to read more about R.I.P. Most authors can only dream of having the kind of imagination that Russell Hoban boasted. He had already written dozens of beloved children's books, including seven books about Frances, a young girl who appears as a badger, before he wrote Riddley Walker, an iconic post-apocalyptic novel. In Riddley Walker, it's 2,000 years in the future, and the Earth has long since been devastated by a nuclear catastrophe, leaving the human race enslaved by mysterious beings. <a href="http://io9.com/5868326/rip-russell-hoban-author-of-over-50-magical-childrens-books-plus-a-post+apocalyptic-classic" title="Click here to read more about R.I.P. Anne McCaffrey wasn't just the inventor of Pern, the world where a whole society is based on dragon-riding. She was also an incredibly influential author who helped transform the way science fiction and fantasy authors wrote about women, and the way all of us thought about bodies and selfhood. She was the first woman to win a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award, as well as a Grand Master of science fiction. <a href="http://io9.com/5862031/rip-anne-mccaffrey-creator-of-pern-and-other-classic-books" title="Click here to read more about R.I.P. Derrick Bell is primarily known as a pioneering law professor who helped improve civil rights in America. But he also wrote one of the most disturbing thought experiments in science fiction, which later became an HBO TV special. In "The Space Traders," aliens arrive and offer the United States "enough gold to retire the national debt, a magic chemical that will cleanse America's polluted skies and waters, and a limitless source of safe energy to replace our dwindling reserves." The U.S. just has to give the aliens one thing in return: all of our black people. (Guess what white Americans decide?) Yoshinobu Nishizaki, the 75-year-old producer of the Space Battleship Yamato animated series, marketed in the United States as Star Blazers, has died. The producer, whose real name was Hirofumi Nishizaki, reportedly fell from the steamship Yamato, which was anchored off the coast of Tokyo's Chichijima Island before its trial voyage. He was wearing a wetsuit, and police believe he was attempting to get off the 485-ton vessel to swim. Nishizaki will be missed. Ralph Vicinanza, a literary agent who specialized in foreign rights, died suddenly at his home on Saturday. For two decades, he represented such high-powered authors as Stephen King, Philip K. Dick, Carl Sagan, Robert A. Heinlein, George R.R. Martin, Terry Pratchett and Kim Stanley Robinson, primarily in overseas deals. In 1998, Vicinanza formed Created By, an L.A.-based production/management company that works mostly with science fiction.

Former book editor Larry Ashmead died aged 78 on Friday. During his 43-year career in publishing, he edited more than 40 books by Isaac Asimov. According to AFP, he also rescued Simon Winchester's account of the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary, The Professor and the Madman from the "garbage bin" after everyone else had turned it down. He also published a book of his own in 2007, Bertha Venation And Hundreds of Other Funny Names of Real People, which included names like Ida Slaptor. He died in a Hudson, NY hospital after a brief illness. Japanese animation has lost one of its giants. Satoshi Kon, director of Paprika and creator of Paranoia Agent, has apparently died at age 47. Gainax employee Takeda Yasuhiro tweeted the news a short time ago, and it was confirmed by Madhouse's Masao Maruyama via the Otakon committee. Paprika, Kon's lush exploration of dreams, was clearly an inspiration for Christopher Nolan's Inception.
