Oh, so that's who Robert Redford is playing in Captain America 2

In a recent interview, Robert Redford revealed not only the name of the character he'll be playing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but also his character's role in the film. It's a mild spoiler that implies a theory that will be a major spoiler if correct, so click at your own risk.

From the interview by The Straits Times:

He is referring to Captain america: The Winter Soldier, a sequel to the 2009 Captain America movie where he will play Alexander Pierce, a villain.

"I like the idea of playing a villain," he says of the role. "I did that just because it's a different thing for me to do."

We already know that Pierce is a head honcho in S.H.I.E.L.D., so making him a villain is an interesting twist. We also know that low-level villains like Crossbones and Batroc ze Leaper will be in the film, and they usually work for somebody — I'd say Pierce is probably it.

But that's not the theory that could be a massive spoiler of true. Now, this is based on Redford's character's name, which bears a more than passing resemblence to Aleksander Lukin, who comics fans might remember as a primary antagonist in Ed Brubaker's lengthy Cap run... a Russian general who was not only the Winter Soldier's handler, but also happened to be possessed by the consciousness of the Red Skull.

Seeing as Hugo Weaving was vocal about not returning to the role, this is a pretty clever way to bring the Red Skull back — and since the movie is all about the Winter Soldier, I'd say it makes sense on a lot of storytelling levels, too. I'm putting my money down as this being true, if only because then I can say holy shit Robert Redford is playing the Red Skull.
