You know Paolo Bacigalupi's arrived when his next novel is already getting raves and nobody's even seen a galley yet. Over at Westword, Alan Prendergast talks about the excitement about Bacigalupi's forthcoming The Drowned Cities, which takes place in the Ship Breaker world but isn't a direct sequel. Chief among those banging the drum for the next Bacigalupi book: Time's Lev Grossman, who's also hyped for the next William Gibson book. (Sorry about the misunderstanding: It's not a novel, it's a non-fiction collection.) More »

Last year, award-winning science fiction authors Tobias Buckell (Sly Mongoose) and Paolo Bacigalupi (Windup Girl) teamed up to write two fantasy novellas set in the same universe. Both novellas, Buckell's "The Executioness" and Bacigalupi's "The Alchemist" are set in the city of Khaim, where an early Renaissance culture has stalled out because the magic that underpins the region's wealth is causing a form of environmental pollution. Every time somebody casts a spell - whether something huge that will create a floating city, or something small that will heal a child's cough - it feeds the "bramble." Bramble is a plant that chokes off farmlands and kills everything in its path, including the humans for whom it is poison. More »

Are Today's SF Magazines Too Wide-Ranging And Eclectic For Most Readers?

"I think almost all of the big respectable science fiction and fantasy magazines have the same exact problem which is that they're eclectic. And, eclectic products have a much harder time finding an audience who will follow them. I'm astounded at the fantasy and science fiction readership, for example, who is willing to read both my story and a Peter Beagle story. I think that those satisfy very different experiential urges, and so having a magazine that caters to both my writing and Peter Beagle's writing means that you have to have a very special reader: someone who's willing to essentially genre jump and experience jump inside of a magazine. I don't think most people are actually like that. I think when we look at consumer magazines and stuff like that we see people narrowing themselves down significantly. I think that the magazines were conceived at the time when an astounding story simply was enough, but now I think that the readership has shifted a lot and so that now you have people who are specifically, "I'm really only a steampunk reader, I don't actually cross over much other stuff." "I really am a military SF reader, I don't really cross over into much other stuff." And so, I think that any generalist fiction magazine has a difficult road there. I mean, I don't know what other readers are like, maybe I'm just stereotyping off of myself, but I honestly don't like to be surprised by the next story I pick up. I kind of know what experience I'm looking for. There's a reason why I return to Elmore Leonard novels or something, because I really like the Elmore Leonard experience, and I want more Elmore Leonard-like experiences. I think it's interesting that a magazine like Analog which in many ways is spoken of being extremely old school and sort of the driest side of science fiction is also the one with the strongest readership, and I think that's because it's closer to providing a consistency of experience from story to story." — Paolo Bacigalupi in Tor.com's Geek's Guide To The Galaxy podcast, via LibraryThing More »

William Gibson Explains The Secret Of SF Writing Success To Paolo Bacigalupi

"I'd stalked William Gibson at one point at a book signing and had asked him what his secret to success was. You know I was a very hungry, very needy sort of writer and was just looking for any kind of a clue about how the whole thing worked. I sort of hovered over his shoulder while he was signing other people's books. I hit him with all of these questions and one of the things that he said was that he'd written short stories until somebody would take him seriously and that was when he managed to actually sell a novel. So I sort of took that to heart and went home and sat down and was like: 'OK, so I need to write a short story. How the fuck do I do this?' More »

Paolo Bacigalupi's smart, worldly writing has made him the new darling of the literary scifi scene, and now you can read his latest story online - it's a very plausible tale about blogger newsrooms of the future, including Gawker. In "The Gambler," our hero Ong works at a media conglomerate competing with Gawker, but he just can't keep his feed numbers up. Bacigalupi's written a keenly-observed story about an unpopular but idealistic writer in a media landscape dominated by celebrity news and gadget reviews. More »

Awesome eco-scifi author Paolo Bacigalupi reports that he's just sold an intriguing-sounding dystopian novel to publisher Little, Brown. Bacigalupi writes, "The book in question is Ship Breaker, a young adult novel about all of my favorite things: global warming, peak oil, genetic engineering, poverty and collapsed societies. You know, happy fun stuff. Fortunately, it’s also a ripping adventure. Joe Monti at Little, Brown is the cool guy who decided to buy it, in a two-book deal." Bacigalupi has already published a book of short stories, Pump Six, and is working on another novel called The Windup Girl.
