Is fighting anime's only appeal supposed to be based on sexual attraction to the characters? I thought people liked different story forms, fighting, mecha, fantasy-myth, high-school, occult or whatever and the sexual appeal was more side appeal? Or do some people characterize anime by its sexual appeal, and not it's graphic style?

Seems the issue of not showing enough female flesh gets the art-director accused of being a "militant homosexual"? Say what? You seem very sensitive to perceived depictions of male beauty or eroticism and seem to express hostility at your perceptions. Have you considered you may be overly sensitive due to strong homophobia?

Perhaps the director wants to focus on the men in the story -- and wants the women to appear to be the short-compact, muscular kind. I've known the type -- thick legs from dance, gymnastics or martial arts(Tai Kwan Do, ~80% footwork). Many of the shorter women get thicker thighs -- especially if they hve short leg s or thighs. The taller, longer-legged ones show better proportion, but you wan t to portray a short type, muscular thighs can be also be handy if the woman is active in sex. Maybe the art director knows some girls w/healthy appetites.

How all that can get turned into 'militant homosexuality'....you really might check your prejudices... They're exposing some rather crude inner sensitivities.

You guys are missing one important fact. Fox is fundamentally against intelligent, though-provoking sci-fi. It's a threat to Fox's mission to dumb down the American audience and play to our baser instincts. Rupert Murdock brought it to America as he though America was potentially being influenced by positive Star-Trek promoted 'humanism' -- of humans growing into more responsible beings by our own efforts. As a country, this was seen as dangerous to Australian-Conservative, Australian Rupert Murdock who brought Fox and eventually Fox News, to provide dumbing-down material in addition to the more increasingly socially responsible American own media. A social disinformation network was needed to get American's heads out of the clouds and introduce fear and doubt to undermine progress.

We should have strong fears when foreign nationals control our major national media -- it allows such foreign nationals to have undue influence in the American people to appeal to their baser instincts, with simplistic message programming -- cop and medical dramas (Bones+House), The flagship "Simpson's" product, then add in the appeal of popularity based comments with a commentator star FAMED for being mean or competitive 'live-scripted shows' where they eliminate contestants each week to give viewers the vicarious feeling of the pain of the rejected on, thenm more drama. Then they added Fox News. The black&white pro-president, pro-war, and **nationalistic**, that uses a large amount of fear-based information, to put fearful users into a receptive state, to become suggestive to the bigotry, racism, and sexism. Closed mindedness becomes a virtue. This appeals to lowest 25% of society that still think this way. It might have dropped to as low as 15-20% in the late 70's. So the party that had lost grounthat this shrinking behavior

Fox is network that is against intelligent social mind-expanding SciFi, as it goes against the basic goal sent down from above (it occasionally get accepted at the lower levels, but as soon as the big guy takes notice: compliance time.) So there's a basic, unstated principle that good SciFi will, eventually, not only be insufficiently base, but possibly throw out positive messages about the future.

I think Dollhouse passed initial inspection due to the appeal to the base erotic potential -- but if the message get's too 'uppity', and Murdock hears reviews that it is thought-provoking -- that might bring it up for increased scrutiny....

What is really bad is not how NBC bleeps words, (which they do to prevent outrageous FCC fines for), but the words also get censored on *cable*. When cable came out it was said that if you wanted uncensored shows, you could pay for cable. But now that cable has become mainstream, the cable-casters censor it anyway even though the FCC's broadcast obscenties rules don't apply to material carried over pay cable (they were designed to protect the 'public air waves' from obscenity.

In the US, they do have something similar to the British Watershed system, but it varies by what timezone you are in. It's supposed to be any show after 10pm can be shown 'uncensored' but in the 'heartlands' where all the most sensitive people live, 10pm (3rd hour prime time) progs show at 9pm -- as in Central and Mountain, their prime time is from 7-10, not 8-11 as it is on the coasts (supposedly this was to support the farming communities of the heartland who needed to rise earlier). The effect on society, however are people in the heartlands are a bunch of early to bed, early-to-rise believers, while the coasts don't expect you to get to bed much before 11:30 or midnight -- coasts have parties lasting into the mornings, but midwest, you'll be lucky if clubs stay open past midnight or 1. Very different culture.

But the censorship really is entirely "optional" and was promised to not exist on cable when they 'sold us on cable', but under the Bush administration, after the Jackson nipplegate, and award-show swearing, the FCC cracked down with unreasonable fines (later overturned due to their capricious application), but the effect was immediate censorship across all common, non-premium cable channels. Scifi (also owned by NBC), started bleeping movies that had shown uncut years ago, Scifi showings of "Ghost in the Machine" that showed uncensored years ago only showed with sexy-thong outfits or nudity fuzzed out -- it used to not be, because it was art, but now, NBC has decided anime is a type of porn, so it gets censored now and then. Even a children's show like InuYasha, is relegated to after 11pm showing only on Cartoon Network on their "Adult Swim", because it is ...TV-14.
Like it's so real 'intense' for today's American children who watch murders every night on TV, but can't see depictions of monsters called 'demons' for for fear of polluting their pure little christian minds. Very annoying load of horse-pucky the way the religions right is editing all common social access to purify society by their standards.

A Time index to seek to would be helpful.
It's not the whole or even the majority of the video from what I can tell (too bored to watch it through, and multiple seek attempts didn't show anything remotely startrek like)...boresville....
Uh...does it parallel a societal push/shift in attitudes? When did negative Sci-fi become popular and when did positive become non-mainstream but 'childish'?

Was 1st star trek main stream or camp, __at the time it aired__, how about ST:NG, or ST:V?

ST:Enterprise was definitely darker.

How did they coincide with US politics (presidents in power) at the time? Is there a connection between "conservatives in power" and stories of doom and gloom becoming more acceptable/mainstream and the converse, "more liberal attitudes in power" and "more optimism expressed in media"? Or is this just my half-rose/half-brown colored glasses...:-)

Of course there there are examples of complete separation of those running a system from the desires and good of those using the system based on the 'leaders' whims based on their own base needs, regardless of the effect of those underneath them.

Sigh...the ever present problem. How to balance between the abuse of direct voice and how to balance between those who don't give enough input to those voices and are autocratic.

I don't see the box to check for previewing my writing in real time (or at all). Grrrr...

What type of stupid 'bug' is this?
:=/

Hey...Where's my preview function!
Well its another example of the the effects of direct democracy. It's why the US chose a republic with "representative" democracy instead of direct -- the representatives were supposed to be intelligent, educated, level-headed types who wouldn't be swayed by "pop-culture" or "mob-mentality". Unfortunately, our representatives are not what they should be, and the mob (due to long-memory extremists) doesn't 'calm down' later, but uses it to decide future elections -- putting in unintelligent 'puppets' who will do what activist leaders of the 'mobs' direct in the future.
Available on iTunes?

Not for free?

They want me to download movie-prequel material in order to fan my interest in the movie -- or worse: to explain the movie so that the movie won't seem lame. And they want me to pay for the right to view their advertisement?

Wow....I'm so underwhelmed.

Re: your omega of reality TV -- it's the juncture of TV and youtube...where, there, anyone can setup their own video...single, multiple, regular...whatever. How much more individual real life options do those who want such, need?
Wish I could respond more personally to the main article above, but can't think of any more respectful way to answer than here.

I could argue individual points but to no point -- I'm in overall agreement. Perhaps up to one point in comparing the endured tortures of the sexes. Not having experienced either, I can't say for sure, but all other things being equal, I think I would hate permanent facial disfigurement and blindness more than being raped. If I had experienced either one, I don't know if I'd be a "grass is greener" or "it could have been worse" type (might depend on the day I was asked, I suppose...who among is is a constant?).

Dunno if it's officially considered a EA game -- their name is on the box, but I finally decided to try "Mass Effect". At $19.95, it was hard to pass up....
"Frack" = "Fuck"?

Yeah, and "darn" or "dern" = damn
and
"shoot" = shit?

and butthead=asshole?

These are call euphemisms -- they are not the same as using the original word. That's why they were "invented" -- so you could refer to the word you were not allowed to say.

Guess some people are denser than others.

Why didn't they like Martha? She was one of my favorites...not to mention looking quite kissable at times (ok. so I find some women attractive, so what of it? Alot of women do! :-))
More worst-case scenario sci-fi crap -- why not some positive themed sci-fi.

That's what I miss about sci-fi -- "hope" -- positive hope for humanity and the future. Nearly all we see these days are negative outcomes of tech and science -- no wonder the US, is ranked 2nd from the bottom in knowledge about evolution science (Turkey ranks bottom) among all first or 2nd world nations..

It's interesting how this site keeps ignoring the Sci-Fi show "Ghost Whisperer"...Even shows it in Sci-Fi magazine...

It's going good this season...

I call bullpucky!
It's not ripping unless it really rips -- i.e. spins the record faster than play speed and reads the grooves digitally.

It's technologically feasible, but probably not at that price. Let's see, that's a 20$ turntable record player hooked upto a 10$ CD burner, maybe 10$ $for assembly, must be using the $440 markup for a legal fund to defend against RIAA lawsuits...

If it WAS digital -- like using a laser to read the grooves, making no contact with the media, now that would be a cool step forward. Last I saw in that area was someone trying to read LP's with an image scanner -- definitely pre-production, proof-of-concept model...

Does Fallout 3 have the same interactive console-access as Oblivion does? I.e. the ability to change game parameters to work around situations or create new and interesting situations?

It would be nice if their console was better documented....but despite that, the fan-added mods to Oblivion have easily doubled or tripled the value of that game.

I'm not sure I'm into the post-nuke world so much as I was a Sword & Sorcery type world. Somehow the idea of playing in a future version of "real life as hell" just isn't as appealing as playing in a fantasy land where great myths and stories can be created unrelated to "real life"...

Is this character change a result of the poor graphics on the Wii? Maybe they can't do so well with realistic looking faces?

It's sad that the Wii is doing so well .. it's like MS triumphing over the original Apple -- mass-marketing triumphs over excellence every time...
