<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Fantasy Gadget: The Ultimate Next Generation Connected TiVo Box]]> Amazing that none of these companies seem able to get it right. Each has some nice little piece of the puzzle, but nothing puts it all together. For example, my Moxi boxes in two separate rooms share recorded video (it's actually only recorded on one of them), but they lack some other features. I use Orb very successfully to do the "sling" thing, but I can only watch live TV, as it won't control the Moxi. (I think; I'm still working on that.) Moxi does allow you to rip your own CDs to it, as well as store photos and do slideshows, for what little that's worth.

<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on New Chrysler Minivans Selling So Well They're Closing The Factory]]> Chrysler has, IMO, always been a design leader, both technically and aesthetically. Hemi. Mainstream FWD, unibody, affordable cars. Turbocharging. Roomy cab-forward designs. Then there's the individual cars: Caravan, Viper, Neon, PT Cruiser, Prowler, 300. All award winners.

The problem with the current minivans is they're ugly! And I'm a fan and current and past minivan owner. Hate that boxy look they've brought to the rear end.

<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Tiwi Blackbox for the Car Tattles When Your Kids Speed]]> How does it know what the speed limit is?

I've owned cars that didn't need this device, as they had trouble getting up to the speed limit in the first place.

Seriously, though, always use your seat belt. Please! It's such a simple thing that really can save your life. So, so many people die every day--every hour--who would live if only they had taken five seconds to buckle a seat belt. I've used them for years now, ever since I was a kid and my grandmother was killed when she didn't.

<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on OpenTable Mobile Lets You Book Restaurant Reservations From Your Phone Without Dealing with Humans]]> I used OpenTable a couple of months ago to make a reservation in Chicago when my daughter and I were going to visit there. It worked out great. We showed up at the restaurant, and in about 30 seconds we were seated. I heard the hostess tell another group there was a two-hour wait.

BTW, I can recommend Cafe Ba Ba Reeba. The food was great.

<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Is Chuck Nuking The Fridge?]]> Reaper has grown to be one of my favorites. Fairly early on I noticed that the "capture-the-soul" bit had become a small part of the story. Like all good fiction, it's about the characters. They've done well developing them, and the last few episodes added a lot and were very good. Ray Wise is just perfectly cast, and the three main male characters make an eccentric but believable trio.

<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Keep Your Premium Car, Ditch The Premium Gas]]> @tad49: As has been mentioned, in America the rating is the average of the Research and Motor octane numbers ((R+M)/2). In Australia you use the Research number alone, so your 98 is roughly the same as our 93. We do have higher octane fuel available, though. There's one station in smallish town I live in that has 100 octane (using the (R+M)/2 method) at the pump.

]]>
<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Keep Your Premium Car, Ditch The Premium Gas]]> I have a factory turbo four with a scan gauge hooked to the computer. The scan gauge shows that it knocks a little on 91 octane under load. It was designed for 93. Or 100 if I hit the magic red "100" button on the dash. Fun times!

<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Keep Your Premium Car, Ditch The Premium Gas]]> You have to remember that the USA is a big place, and more driving is required. I live in a medium-sized state in terms of land area, but driving from one end to the other takes about 7 hours. I used to live in Texas. You can drive all day--12+ hours--and still be in Texas! When my kids were little and we used to drive to visit my parents, my kids would always say, "Are we still in [whatever state]?!?" because it took so long to drive through them.

<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Review: Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner is the Worst Gadget I Have Ever Used In My Entire Life]]> Dang! I forgot to mention, you can get a big bottle of the manual shower spray at the dollar store for...a dollar. Instead of 3 or 4 times that much for the name-brand stuff.

]]>
<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Review: Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner is the Worst Gadget I Have Ever Used In My Entire Life]]> I've used the manual spray kind, and it helps a little; at least makes it easier to clean. Which I do regularly once a year if it needs it or not.

We have a fiberglass tub and shower that I'm sure was very nice when it was installed in the 70s or so. One thing I do after I clean it is give it a coat of Rain-X, you know, the stuff for car windows. Waxing it with car wax works good, too.

Sorry, that just popped into my head. On an almost but not quite totally unrelated note, back in the 80s I had a math professor originally from the Soviet bloc who used to say everything was a "peez ov kake." I enjoyed his classes. He always told us what the math theories were called in Soviet schools. It was always some Russian who came up with each one.

<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Cellphone Pics Get You Custom Color Sneakers in Nike PhotoID Promo]]> I wish I could send them a picture of some shoes, and they could make the shoes. The best pair of shoes I ever owned was a pair of Nike "after-game" slip-ons. Super-comfortable, and they lasted more than 5 years. Alas! They don't seem to make anything like that now, nor have I been able to find anyone who does. I'm wearing some kind of Propét slip-on walking shoe now, but while it fairly comfortable, it's already starting to come apart at the seams after less than a year.

<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Ultra Late Adopter: Why I Don't Want an iPhone... But Will Probably Cave Anyway]]> I'm a mixed bag, an occasional early adopter. Like paying about $650 for a 640x480 digital camera years ago. But even if I wanted an iPhone I'm kinda stuck with Verizon, because it's the only decent signal I can get at my house. I used to be with Cingular before moving here. In any case, my current 4-year-old phone still works perfectly fine (battery has been replaced), and I can't even remotely justify spending the money on anything else.

]]>
<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on Verizon Offers Discount Bundle to Those Who Don't Want a Landline]]> I'd jump on it...if there was FiOS here in the sticks. The last time I read the FiOS terms of service (which was at least a couple of years ago when I lived in a place that had it), it was unlike most other broadband services in that it actually allowed you to run servers, so long as you didn't screw up the network. Is that still the case?

]]>
<![CDATA[CSX321 commented on 25 Reasons Why Cable Technicians Hate You]]> I wouldn't tip the cable guy, but if I get especially good service from anybody, I try somehow to let their superior know they did a good job. (Although I've found that it scares wait staff if you ask to see the manager; I guess they don't get many compliments.)

I did this just recently when a Charter tech was not fazed at all by my whole-house video system. He did what he was there to do, and he even had an idea on a slight variation to my setup that gave me a better picture on one particularly long run.

I've had Charter cable, broadband, and phone service for about 3 years, and my experience with them has been surprisingly good. Except that I really don't like that recent announcement about monitoring 'net usage and targeting ads! I just sent them a complaint about that today.
