I'm still looking for something that combines Deus Ex's first person and storytelling elements with the space trading/combat elements of Freelancer or the X series.
Imagine being able to run around inside your own ships! Or even board other ships and battle your way through the Ship's interior.
I saw the PLAY! Symphony last night in Vancouver and was sorely disappointed that they didn't play anything from Morrowind, Oblivion BF1942 or Company of Heroes (I thought for sure they would do CoH seeing as Jeremy Soule was in the audience and CoH was developed by Relic in Vancouver).
@icy_one: I disagree, these questions are fundamental to the stargate mythology and since destiny is more or less on auto-pilot it would be easy for the writers to integrate situations where these questions might arise into the show.
Even in battlestar galactica, which as many of you pointed out was heavily character driven still needed to reveal things about the cylons and the mythology of the universe to keep it interesting.
If SGU doesn't start revealing some mythology, it's going to get really boring, really fast.
After all, I don't think anyone started watching SGU because they thought the characters were going to be interesting, they wanted to know what lies beyond the milky way and pegasus galaxies.
@icy_one: I'm not saying they should be doing any retconning or bringing in any humanoid races, just put something fantastic out there to make it seem less generic. As mysterious as these new aliens are, they are totally bland, they have one type of ship which basically looks like a spacefaring city bus. I'd like to know more about these aliens and I find it strange that none of the characters are asking any questions about the aliens aside from "Why do they want Chloe/Destiny". Questions they should be asking and exploring are: what kind of society do they have, who/what leads them, where is their home, how far does their reach extend.
In terms of how the show has been going so far the we know that in two galaxies there are two total races of aliens and the most interesting thing out there is Destiny, which seems to be why they are chasing after it.
My complaint has to do more with a lack of new content and mysteries than it has to do with connecting the show to previous the stargate series.
It's not that I dislike the show either, it's that I'm dissatisfied with a lack of new content.
@icy_one: I realize this, but this is a decision that was made in creating the story. I'm saying if they visited more planets with sentient beings on it, the show would be more interesting. They keep talking about how destiny takes the crew to these different planets for specific reasons why not take the crew to one of these planets?
I would say as for the naming of the aliens they could easily have one of the crew come up with a name for them, it could even be something humorous, especially since there are other aliens already populating the Stargate universe.
These practical reasons you address are simply excuses to not do proper storytelling. It simply seems like there isn't enough interesting things about the places they are going to keep the audience interested.
It's not so much a failure in storytelling as it is a failure in worldbuilding, or in this case universe-building.
One thing that really bothers me about "Universe" is there isn't much in the way of universe building. One thing that I loved about the previous SG series was when the SG teams would go to a planet and meet some new civilization, then in later episodes these civilizations, groups or planets would be referenced or revisited.
In SGU they haven't been on a single planet with a name, they haven't even given or revealed the name of the "Aliens from the other Galaxy" or the short ones we met a few weeks ago.
As a result of this, I find it hard to keep excited about the series, the main plot seems to just be wandering.
At the very least the show should be opening up more rooms on destiny and revealing new capabilities every couple of episodes.
@bigox 25: I used something similar to this several years ago at a former place of employment and it was the most amazing chair i've ever used, it was basically fully adjustable from every angle and it didn't seem to matter that the seats were basically just mesh, it pretty much provided perfect support.
