Yeah, it's why the smell of rotting human flesh and burning human skin and hair smells so awful and distinct. I don't think your body can really recognize human flesh being flambeed though.
You stepped in at a good time with DC rebooting just a few months ago. Swampthing, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Justice League, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman (no seriously,) Adventure Comics and Detective are all really good reads and you don't have to worry about a ton of story line or back issue.
Marvel: If you want to jump into the Universe, I'd pick up the Event trades to get caught up starting with Avengers Disassembled. If you want just some good trades to read: Alias, Immortal Ironfist, Thunderbolts, Runaways, Planet Hulk, Ultimate Spider-man. As far as ongoing if you want to start grabbing comics monthly: Wolverine and the Xmen is the best of the X books right now, Avenging Spider-man, Ultimate Spider-man, Secret Avengers (It's self contained no arcs.)

DS9 Needs it's own movie. It was the best of the shows and I love how everyone at the end of the series was so much different then they began.
The way that one ended it needs it's own movie, I'd even take a mini series. I was going to suggest this one.
