[www.bbc.co.uk] years ago this week the idea of mutually assured nuclear destruction was outlined in a major speech. But how did this frightening concept of the Cold War fade from people's psyches?
Today the notion of all-out nuclear war is rarely discussed. There are concerns about Iran and North Korea's nuclear programmes and fears that terrorists might get hold of a nuclear bomb.
But the fear of a war in which the aim is to wipe out the entire population of an enemy has startlingly diminished."
In the 70s I was a boy living in Las Vegas. Once or twice a month the ground would shake from bombs being detonated at the nearby underground nuclear test facility. And every Saturday at noon the civil defense siren would loudly blare in its weekly test.
It's amazing how much the world has changed since then.

ETA: the formatting bug is really getting irritating. Remove any after the url and you'll be at the right page.
Be sure you see the most recent episode. Without being too spoilery, one of the contestants throws their partner under the bus in front of the judges (and the other contestants). Things may start getting tense. #observationdeck
Also, how did I not notice last season how hot McKenzie Westmore is? #observationdeck
Physicists have come up with an equation that explains and predicts the shape of a ponytail...the findings showed how physics could be used to "solve a problem that has puzzled scientists and artists ever since Leonardo da Vinci remarked on the fluid-like streamlines of hair in his notebooks 500 years ago".
Well I found this interesting anyway.
Did I miss a reference to her being immune? I thought the Mayor was holding her as a hidden ace to play against Mr. Gold. #observationdeck
This time of year just makes me want to firebomb something.
Anyway, interesting list.
Now excuse me while I go add another layer of foil to my hat. #observationdeck
Recent studies suggest maths laws may govern everything from the timing of earthquakes to tennis player rankings...The idea has arisen in most of these cases that some single, unknown mechanism is at work, that nature itself is imposing order in a way we simply do not yet understand. Why else would the distributions of wealth among tennis players and fencing champions be identical?
Then again, it might just be coincidence.
Either way I'll probably check it out if it happens.
