@TheDarkWayne: Always worth bearing in mind, though: The first page of Batman RIP is Batman saying "You're wrong! Batman and Robin will never die!" I don't know how much more obviously he could've signposted the ending right from the start, even if anyone had thought that DC would consider killing him off in the first place.
@TheDarkWayne: I'm not sure why it's Morrison's "fault" for writing a story the way he wanted...? Personally, I think that Final Crisis ending with the reveal that Batman is alive makes perfect sense thematically: It's literally the happy ending that Superman wished for, a few pages earlier.
@Pope John Peeps II: It's been a while since I read the end of Morrison's X-Men, but wasn't Xorneto plot a double metacommentary on the old X-Men stories? That Xorn turns out to be Magneto is a shout-out to classic Marvel soap opera the same way that the Emma/Scott/Jean love triangle is ("My best friend is... MY ENEMY!"), and also part of the commentary on how old/boring/overfamiliar/nonsensical Magneto is as a villain (I'm pretty sure that becomes text during the story, with a character complaining that Magneto is a thing of the past? Someone who's read it more recently, am I misremembering?) - It's *meant* to appear somewhat ridiculous, because it's demonstrating the ridiculousness of what we as readers were used to.
