I've read The Mirage. The UAS is not a wholly secular state, it is based on Islamic principles, but is more tolerant and pluralist than any Middle Eastern nation in our world with the exception of possibly Turkey. It's a great book of allohistory and examinations of human nature.
As commented below, Unca Harlan did a handful of stories about the Earth-Kyba wars, "Demon With a Glass Hand" is part of that cycle. There are also further exploits of Vic and Blood. There are two graphic novels adapted from this stuff. [www.sequentialellison.com]
Ants taste very peppery. I haven't eaten mass quantities, but some Pepcid might be needed. Chimps will seek out certain plants to counter the agita they get from chowing down on an anthill.
Nope. Laika's capsule went through a wormhole then touched down gently in the Pleistocene tundra. She lived a long and happy life chasing saber-toothed squirrels.
io9 should be ashamed of belittling this brave scientist who isn't afraid to expose the truth. These jokes support the Conspiracy perpetrated by the military-industrial complex and the reptiliods like "Queen" Elizabeth II. They know that the existence of Back Flaps will bring down their reign and usher in a Age of Peace and Galactic Brotherhood as foretold by the ascended dolphin masters of Tibet. WAKE UP SHEEPLE!! DO NOT FEAR THE TRUTH!!!!!
The Laundry novels are a humorous mash-up of espionage thriller, Lovecraft, with a heavy dose of IT worker culture. The first one, The Atrocity Archives, was very enjoyable even to a non-tech geek such as myself. A fourth book though? the charm may be wearing thin. (see The Merchant Princes series)
