Use ca.jezebel.com- it is the only way i can use any of the gawker sites now. Thanks @Norton for the tip! #Groupthink
oh my god thank you for this. I was going nuts. #Groupthink
You're looking for Fremdschämen. In english, I think the closest thing would be "vicarious embarassement". #Groupthink
This article is terrific! It covers all the possible approaches! Gotta look these over, but I'm glad there's a lot of literature on the subject so I can make sure we're approaching it and have a framework to discuss instead of floundering through statements blindly. #Groupthink
Sorry if I came off as dismissive, and reading my original comment, I definitely didn't mean to disparage other people's right to feel offended, and I do apologize if I offended anyone; I really am just trying to get a little more historical context on this, as maybe I am too young to be aware of the historical precedent that defined this word as offensive.

However, while we're on the subject- you have stated that 'People of Indian/Pakistani descent aren't often seen/regarded as "Asian" here.', and I know people that bristle at that distinction as well, because the Indian peninsula is part of Asia, and the term Asian is frequently used in a way that excludes them, which is illogical as well.
I'm Asian and I don't get the hubbub over "oriental". In fact, in the UK that seems to be the commodity term for east asian (because over there "Asian" refers to Indian/Pakistani/South Asian, as that's the more prevalent demographic there).

It seems like something someone just created so we had something to make a fuss over. Am I ignorant of some crushing historical context that I should be aware of?

Everyone always complains "Oriental is for rugs". Uhhh, I hear people refer to "Persian rugs" all the time, and I'm sure a designer on HGTV could call for a "Japanese Rug", and that wouldn't make the term Japanese suddenly horribly offensive.
After reading the article on partner income disparities:

I had a tangential thought that I thought might make a good discussion. How do most people handle finances in a relationship these days? Separate accounts? One monolithic account? Something in between? #Groupthink
Hmm, good point. Well, Google Sites is the new Geocities, which isn't a great thing to be.
well, when each person is forced to post in quadruplicate, it helps the comment count a little bit :P
They had me until "Google Sites". Nothing says "fancy wedding site" like a mandatory link at the bottom that says "Report Abuse" that can't be hidden...

I've never seen a Google Site that didn't look like the worst thing in the world.
I would heart all of you, except your sweater is ugly.
David Beckham: The original guywithiphone?
Why don't my sweaters look like that?

Oh right, I don't have them painted on by sherpas.
She has major butterdoucheface.
Ugh. Just give them a reality show already so I can ignore them more efficiently.
I thought the same thing. This story does not pass the smell test. You can find any organization's 990s (declaration of finances) at the Foundation Center website- and you can find this organization's form here: [dynamodata.fdncenter.org]

They had $2,204 in assets in 2009. There's no way this charity could have afforded her famously extravagant speaking fees, much less funded any kind of event.

Even their website is super creepy, (skpfoundation.com) - it's hosted on some free website builder, and there's almost no actual content on it, other than the outrage over the response to their event.

The whole thing is super fake. Who can afford Sarah Palin and to throw a lavish fundraiser, and can't even afford a real domain hosting service??

Any non-profit organization that is paying Sarah Palin's ridiculous speaking fees is clearly not managing its assets well.
What happened to the "Fusion" view. Is that still available in some form? #crosstalk
