Your analysis on matters of tackiness and self-indulgence is correct, in my view.
But I wonder if I could convince you that in this one instance, tackiness and self-indulgence aren't necessarily fatal flaws.
Here's my only point: In no part of my admittedly addled brain have I ever envisioned a community of more than about three people expressing feelings of DFW-affection that are basically the same as my own.
Without people blithely crossing the frontiers of tackiness and self-indulgence on this occasion, I would never have witnessed such a mind-blowing miracle, and would have figured that me and my weird architect friend were pretty much alone in our comprehension of this terrible news.
So in conclusion, tacky and self-indulgent yes, but also no one gets hurt and a tiny miracle results.
Submitted respectfully. I find your analysis bang-on and on normal occasions I'm at least as bugged as anyone by tackiness and self-indulgence. But I do think it's okay to make an exception here, where it seems harmless and may even contribute to slightly softer landings for a lot of folks.

Actually I'm 21, just; I don't think I properly figured out how old I was in September, 2001. Or I 'forgot'... Which should at least qualify me for VP, right? Will my foreign citizenship be a problem?

@Pope John Peeps II: It was not a terrible comment. I did feel a twinge when I read it. And I did not heed it.
Don't apologize for succinctly summing up what I suspect was public sentiment. Keep up the good work.
Nevertheless, I notice you have no friends.

Dude, if you are going to do drive-by shootings on Jez, it isn't too classy to do so with such a superior attitude and then refuse to engage in further discussion.
Not that I'm suggesting the internet is a bastion of class, FWIW.

Peeps, whereabouts are you? Any chance you'll be in the vicinity of Vancouver on the 26th for the commenter meetup? We've got fab plans and guaranteed 100% Julia Allison-free!

You're completely right about male sex writers. There's a real lack of non-douchey heterosexual men writing about their own sex lives. I keep trying to persuade my ex to do it but he refuses...
I did post something about it somewhere in that mega thread but it's probably lost around the 400 mark.
