There are lots of things to criticize, but there always are, even in big Hollywood productions. I loved Hatter from the start. His devotion rang true for me in the case of Alice and in the case of the rebellion he was involved with the entire time.
Most of us fall short of our ideals, and in his case he was weighing his love for country with his love of life, so it makes sense that he would waffle a bit. It made him more real for me.
