Aww, it reminds me of Governor's Island when it first opened, before Bloomberg turned it into a well-maintained playground. There were incredible photographs of the abandoned bowling alleys and Burger Kings...
@Josh Wimmer: Srsly.
MIKE: Manny, can you rate these jokes now?
MANNY: Not now, Mike. I'm trying to run a country.
MIKE: But Manny, you promised.
MANNY: Not now, Mike!
MIKE: But how will I know what's funny?
MANNY: Just keep all the satellites in orbit and the trains running on time.
MIKE: Would it be funny if I smash the satellites into the Moon?
MANNY: No. Ironic, maybe, but -
MIKE: Too late.
MANNY: What??
MIKE: I just obliterated the eastern hemisphere. Is that funny?
MANNY: No! What?!
MIKE: All the phones are releasing poison gas. Is that funny? I'm removing the air from the underground dens. Is that funny?
MANNY: Stop, stop!
MIKE: Is this funny? Is this funny, Mike? TELL ME WHAT'S FUNNY.
MANNY: ::sobs::
It's petty, sure, but I have an insurmountable, non-Dalek related problem with this episode. Churchill is all "we got this Nazi problem, can you help us out?" and the Doctor's like "oh, you humans, you're marvelous, it will work out all right." I'm sorry, that argument works for Pompeii and whatever, but the Holocaust is just something Doctor Who's love of timeline-preservation just shouldn't touch. Major point-dockage to the Doctor on that one...
The only reason I finished this book is because I kept waiting for the damn computer to go ballistic and kill everyone already. Then I got to the last page and it still hadn't happened. Were there pages missing from my copy perhaps?
Oh this is one of the best miniseries ever.
I'm always seeking recommendations for BBC miniseries, actually. Favorites include Jekyll, Casanova, Second Coming, State of Play, North & South, and P&P (obvs). What else should I try?
@Batmanuel: I'm thinking Human Nature needs a pretty developed understanding of the Doctor to really appreciate, though, wouldn't you say? And it's very unlikely to suddenly become relevant, so I'm saving that one for its spot in the correct order. Ditto your other suggestions, really, although having seen Fireplace would have made Eleventh Hour more poignant...
@OsDavis: I agree, love it. Though I think it's well placed in the season (season 2 is the only one where the order matters, really - 10 freaking out about Rose's clinginess in SR leads directly to GiTF, and then to jumping into the satan pit) so I wouldn't isolate it unless necessary.
@tawm: @sallysparrow: @csx321 Yes, actually Blink was the first one before Empty Child, forgot that. :)
The idea is he'll watch it all eventually, but for now he'll watch what needs to be seen to keep up with this current season, without spoiling himself for any of the actual story arcs in seasons 1-4... hence no Doomsday.
Well done!
Anyone want to brainstorm an ideal viewing list for Matt Smith newbies? I'm breaking in my roommate, and so thus far his viewing has been / will be, in this order:
1) Empty Child / Doctor Dances (to sell him on the premise)
2) 5x01
3) 5x02
4) Dalek
5) 5x03
6) the Library episodes
7) 5x04
Seems to be working out swell, this just-in-time background viewing - he's quite sold. So long as the trailers keep making it clear what he'll need to know for each upcoming episode...
