"placebo effect" is unfortunate terminology as the placebo itself doesn't cause an effect. A more appropriate term for this phenomena would be the "meaning response mechanism" that activates inside our mind/bodies. The placebo is simply a symbol that we ascribe meaning to, many times we ascribe meaning at the subconscious level. This is why even when a subject is told a pill is a placebo, it may still activate a meaning response. Much of this has to do with the color of the pill... and even the shape or the number of pills taken.
Vote: Sony Bur... I mean, Vegas Pro. But seriously, it's by far my favorite editor. And the more recent versions even handle quicktime files!

@mike_311: but the people are being treated as commodities. On facebook when you play a "free" game you are usually asked to send out spam messages to your friends in order to acquire game points. The problem isn't the information itself, it is the context of the information transfer that degrades the bias of the digital network towards social connection, or contact. As Rushkoff says "any effort to redefine or hijack those connections for profit end up compromising the integrity of the network itself, and compromising the real promise of contact." Treat your online friends like you would face to face, not as targets for advertising.

If we treat ourselves like content and view this a a "fair trade" then we are missing out on the true potential of the social network. Contacts should not be valued for what they provide but for the value of the contact itself.

This whole fad theme of "post modern societies losing their humanity" stinks of of some of the conclusions made in Huxley's Brave New World. I love the book, but the one thing I never fully agreed on was that altering the state of the human (such as chemically- with drugs) need not always degrade us. In fact, I see a lot of potential for drugs/medicine/technology to enhance our humanity and increase our quality of life. Huxley's savage character saw the "soma" drug as something that degraded the soul because of the negative side effects- modern medicine still hasn't reached the point where only positive results are achieved, such as with anti-depression meds. They help with the depression but come with other bad effects such that Huxley would argue takes away from our platonic essence. But this will eventually change when only the depression is cured (enhancing our platonic essence) and doesn't carry other unwanted degradations of the mind. Why must we be against progress and technology for the sake of rebellion? Open your eyes, Luddites!
