China Mieville seems like a perfect addition to the list, I have to say. Most of his books concern unique and wonderful cityscapes, and this interview at BLDGBLOG is a must-read: [bldgblog.blogspot.com]
I once bought a 17-inch Alienware laptop and had some of my worst PC-gaming experiences with it. In the three years that the warranty (thank god) covered, my hard drive crashed twice, my AC adaptor melted away its own adhesive and came apart, and the worst is this: in the space of three months, I had to send my laptop back to their shop five times because the GPUs kept crashing. In effect, they kept either not fixing/replacing my GPU, or replacing it with something that was equally broken.
My hard drive crashed again soon after the warranty expired; I replaced that out of pocket and then the wireless receiver broke inside the machine.
I guess the trouble is that they're still at the top of the food chain when it comes to gaming laptops. If you just want a desktop, I recommend you go anywhere else
@icarus212001: I disagree. What do you, the consumer, get out of competition between softwares? You get variety, quality, price (sometimes)... competition between hardwares brings the same thing, ideally. Sure, we lose out on price, as buying all three can be expensive - but think how expensive it would be if one company had a monopoly on it? Think of what you'd lose with regards to variety - which is a catalyst for variety in software
@Amp: I agree with this, it's pretty much what I was going to say.
There's been some times when, due to other factors in my life, I just didn't feel like doing anything BUT mindlessly plugging myself into the computer. Then, generally through the wisdom of friends, I find myself away from the PC for a few days and when I return the urge is not nearly as strong, or even present.
@BigDaddy0790: You're pretty much just arguing about semantics. Whether it's addiction or "addiction" the poor kid has a serious problem - it's being called addiction because that's either what it is or what it is very similar to.
@IloveBurritos And THAT'S funny because I was wondering how I could work a 'baby film/adult film' joke in there. C&H, as usually beat me to a terrible joke.
