I thought the bugs in Mimic where a really good concept (using their wing casings to mimic human appearance) but not unearthly enough to be scary.

@Jeff-Minor: In the novel Footfall the invaders have inherited their tech and spent lifetimes in transit to Earth so it's feasible alien tech wouldn't be that hugely advanced; it also makes for a good story :)
