from what I remember, the Chinese had reached the southern tip of Africa via sea by 1350, and could have reached Europe within 20 years at the rate they were going with the exploration voyages. then they just called the fleets home. that would be a great pivot point for an alt-history; indeed I can't imagine that someone hasn't done it already.
