There's a nice book by Tee Morris which a reverse portal. A fantasy dwarf get's transported to 1920's Chicago. He sets himself up as a private detective. Quite good fun. It's called 'Billibub Baddings and The Case of the Singing Sword'. It's even available as a free podiobook :)
It's actually not that impossible at all that we'll be seeing DS9. If TNG gets picked up for hd cable then that will fund the restoration process for all of TNG. At the end they'll be looking to continue making revenue so DS9 would be an obvious possibility. They'd probably do a single season to test the waters. When that happens we must make a hug fuss over it and make sure it gets watched :D
I think it's more about showing off the relative difference. Both are gifs but the quality difference is obvious. Besides... they wouldn't want to spoil the first looks we'll get at the blu ray when it arrives :D
The main draw of doing this is to sell the show to hd cable. I'm certain it'll be picked up for at least a season. If it proves popular... and why wouldn't it? Then they'll run the whole thing. That's got to bring enough cash in to start ds9... so...ahem.. orgasm away! :D
That's not what they're trying to do I think. It's about showing the relative difference between the two images. Both are compressed/have artifacts and look worse due to being a gif but you can see a clear improvement between the two.
Why wait. After the initial 3 episode disc, we'll have to wait maybe a year before we see the first series on blu. That's assuming we can establish a cable tv marker for it.... with luck this will all happen quickly but I reckon we'll have plenty of time to watch the dvds/netflix before we watch them all again in HD :D
Ah yes. The problem there is that it's hard to objectively decide where best to put funding. If we'd always gone down the route of what will most probably be more profitable in the short term, lots of important research would never have been done. I think the best recipe is a mix of short term gain work and longer term gain work... with just a pinch of blue sky stuff for flavour :)
Indeed. Often most people only read an article written about a recent paper/study... They never get to the actual work itself. Then again if you don't have journal access secondhand is all you'll get. Sadly, not all science writers are god at what they do.
Well I'd argue that a study that on the surface is just about socks keeping our feet warm will contain a pile of interesting data, possibly some never before examined aspects of how and why. I work in science outreach with a quantum physics group. People actually question whether we're just making it all up and since we can't use most of the research for anything that the public will have in their homes yet what use it it? Those people would probably be much happier to see money spent on sock research :P
One other thing (came up in discussion here at home) is that they appear to be using a certain type of rapist. They all sound like single opportunists. Given that a significant number of rape victims are partners (wives, girlfriends, etc) then you probably find many rapists say lovely, nice and caring things about women too. It's similar to murder in this respect.
I do find it interesting that the term 'girl' is also standard in most of the girly mags... oh I just used it myself but you know what I mean. Boots say 'Christmas brought to you by the girls'. I go for a 'Night out with the girls' or have a 'girls night in'. I'd argue that the use of the term girl is much more widespread and may not necessarily be used in lad mags to infantilise women. How weird does inviting you for a 'Women's night out' or a 'Women's night in' sound?
Is it really a unicorn on the first tee? If so I need one! It looks like just a pegasus though but cant really tell from the pic... still awesome but not a unicorn :(
