Mainichi == Daily. So it's Mainichi News or Daily News, but Mainichi Daily news is just Daily Daily news....
hey, I still live in Connecticut!
CH Cherryh's "Heavy Time", "Rimrunners", "Hellburner" -- definitely worth a look, definitely very military SF.
What was most unexpected was that the star was young, popular, and was on a beginner gravity gradient that should have been totally safe. Local systems noted that the victim had not been taking basic heliopause precautions just before the explosion.

@Lamar is there anyone who isn't aware of the usual shorthand of noting the date of events as the date when the event was observed? Besides you?

I can't wait to find out more about the Necromongers! They sound MEAN!!!
So, series 8 never happened? Good.

That was the one where nanobots recreated Red Dwarf and resurrected everyone who died in the explosion, including Rimmer. It was pretty stupid aside from one or two good bits.

@LittleDragon: Kara's story ended when she exploded in the atmosphere of the gas giant. Kara-2 was sent back as a replacement and, like the Final Five, had no idea what she was until the end.
@omgwtflolbbqbye: Don't get me wrong; I loved Doc M's story in the original comic. It was very poignant, it was great. And in the movie, I absolutely loved the crystal watch castle ship thing. I just felt the movie had too much to explain to really give his story enough poignance, and, though I am a HUGE FAN of the comic, I thought the movie dragged when he was on screen. Plus, the laughter from the audience killed the mood.
The movie could have lost Dr. Manhattan altogether, rearranged the plot so that it didn't revolve around him -- yes, largely ignored all the reflections on humanity and all that -- and it would have been a better film, if only marginally related to the comic.

Crudup's Dr. Manhattan was so low energy, I think the theater kinda fell into a trance whenever he was on the screen. Compare that to the energy of the scenes in the jail, or the romance between Silk Spectre II and Night Owl II. They could have added in more with Hollis, more of the "Beneath the Hood" story, more of nearly everything. Just be eliminating the big blue sleep aid and his dangling punch line.

Was that Mary McDonnell's real hair?

Sorry :(

Wow, I hope the BSG movie goes back to the Casino Planet or the Wild West planet or the Smuggler Planet! The old series really made you feel the reality of the bare remnants of humanity fleeing the destruction of their worlds...

and then stopping in on the Casino Planet in the very next episode for some serious partying!

I live in Connecticut. Um, I must be totally blase or something; is it really considered a hell-hole? Good education spending, 70% covered by forests, long beautiful coastline, close to Massachusetts and New York if you like that sort of thing...
Not Kate Elliot's "Jaran"? That was about as pure a romance novel as I'd ever read in SF :) Anne McCaffrey's "Weyr Search" was pretty obviously romance...
