Yes -- The Radiation Safety Officer told me that one piece was safe to rinse off. I've since taken that sentence out of the blogpost because a lot of people have misconstrued it to mean that it's safe to wash radium down the drain. The RSO suspected that one piece was not very radioactive and just had a little dust on it, so he had me do that one as an experiment. If you have a piece that you think has radium paint on it, DON'T TRY TO WASH IT OFF. Set it aside and have someone check it with a radiation meter.
One minor quibble. My name's actually Jane Irwin. Vogelein is the name of my graphic novel series, and my website. I sometimes use it for my account name, as I've done here.

Thanks!

Bit of trivia -- Johann Maelzel, the guy who bought The Turk from von Kempelen's heirs, actually exhibited The Turk in the same building as Barnum did Joyce Heth. It's said that Barnum got the idea for the "robot woman" scam from watching the Turk's flagging popularity.

I'm a huge fan of this stuff, so much so that I've started a graphic novel about The Turk. You can read the whole thing, for free, here: ClockworkGame.com.

I'm hoping to follow it up with sequels about Vaucanson and John Harrison, the guy who made the Longitude Clock.

I'm also a fan of Boilerplate -- go check it out, it's gorgeous.
