The terrorizing effect that such crimes have on the rest of the group as a whole is why the category exists. A hate crime does not only harm the victim directly, but it also serves to tell others like the victim to live in fear that the same thing could happen to them. Burning a cross on someone's front yard is not mere property damage, for example. It sends a direct and unmistakable message to all people of color living in the area.
This current bill exempts police and firemen. That does not mean that they will not have their bargaining rights attacked in the future in entirely separate legislation, which is why there are police and firefighters protesting at the Capitol in solidarity.
@drunkexpatwriter: The clothing for female characters in the FF series tend to run to the appalling. Tifa - tiny shorts and BOOBS. Rikku - tiny shorts and tiny bra. Sorceress Edea - long robe with plunging neckline and BOOBS. I know there are more that I can't think of offhand, but the wardrobe of female characters in the FF series can be quite insane at times.
@LostBedStuy: Seriously, does every post about a woman have to include some asshole swipes at Jezebel? I'm a feminist and there are NO "but but buts" for this woman's behavior. As other people in this thread have already said, this woman and people like her harm actual victims of rape by making the public assume that they must be lying, too.
@OldCrankyBroad: Yes, people will still make references to teenagers "wilding" and cite this case explicitly and very few of them seem to realize that these teens were wrongfully convicted. It makes me very sad.
Unwanted touching of genitals definitely rises to the definition of "assault," however. Although the sad thing is we're only talking about this issue now because men are getting felt up by other men.
You know, I really hate that fucking tagline on that cover. Talk about emotional blackmail. I'm pretty sure THIS happened when we were STILL IN Afghanistan! I learned about the atrocities being committed against women by the Taliban back when I was in college in the mid-'90's, and what did we as a country do about it then? NOTHING. Our presence in Afghanistan has nothing to do with human rights, and pretending otherwise is crass and foul.
@forget it: Because no one ever has conflicted emotions and behaves illogically after a situation like this. As we all know, any woman who stays with a man after he's abused her obviously wasn't abused because she would just leave.
@SunnyBunnyDays: Because it's not censorship. A private company is not compelled to sell every product that is offered, nor is Amazon's refusal to sell the book in any way a suppression of its publication. The author is free to take his product and attempt to sell it elsewhere.
What a narcissistic asshole. An American city destroyed by a natural disaster. A war that kills hundreds of thousands (and probably a million) Iraq citizens. And not to mention the 9/11 attacks killing over 3000 Americans. But "he called me a racist" is his low point. No sir, I do not "miss you yet."
@FroderickFronkensteen: Unfortunately I've had to remind more than one friend that Tyson is in fact a convicted rapist. They usually just remember the ear chomping. I think there is a double standard regarding Gibson and Tyson, but agree with other posters that Galifinakis might not have had as much of a voice while filming the first movie.
The issue is bigger than Ms. Geimer, frankly. Polanski has exhibited a pattern of going after young teens. Giving him zero punishment for crimes that have been proven in court is an injustice to all the other girls that he very likely has victimized in his lifetime. There is a social responsibility to make sexual predators pay for their crimes. The sad thing is, the punishment that he was likely to have gotten back then still isn't harsh enough.
@la.donna.pietra: To be fair, there's a little more to the Brandon Teena story than this. You're right, Teena dated teen girls when he first began identifying as a man....he was also in his teens at the time. He was dating someone only two or three years younger than he at the time that he was brutally raped and subsequently murdered.
