I took this train ride but was asleep for 1/3rd of it, stared out the window for 1/6th of it, and read Stranger in a Strange Land for the rest of it. It was quite beautiful and it was fun to jump out in the snow during the smoke breaks the train stopped for.
Russell's German: "I wouldn't do it. I'll rip out your heart. You stupid slut!" Schlampe = slut in the swedish it's Slampa, just in case Eric or Pam ever use it.
Dear True Blood: thanks for including both German and Swedish (the two languages I know), in the series. Russell calling Sookie a "Schlampe" (aka a slut) was awesome!
I read a book speculating on this a few years ago, and they said they didn't have dna evidence yet but the author basically said "there is no way male humans were around female neanderthals and didn't try to frak them. Even if they looked different and unattractive to the humans, the men still would have tried"
@Counterglow: I hate dubbing for a similar reason. I feel like a big part of the actors' performance and intention is in the line delivery. Which is why I still haven't seen Dark Knight. I was in a small village in Germany when it came out and didn't want to see the actors(especially Heath Ledger) dubbed.
Was it just me or were Joss Whedon & co sitting around thinking it would be awesome to tease a Felicia Day/Maurissa Tancharoen? Penny/Groupie #2 OTP forever.
More seriously, these write ups have been really great. None of my friends have been convinced enough to watch the show so its been nice to come here after watching and seeing what other people think.
I found this ending more satisfying than previous Joss Whedon Finales. I was shocked they gave Tony/Priya a happy ending, surprised they made me actually care about Paul/Echo (props to Eliza Dushku's freak out, made Alpha even more awesome, and although Topher was my favorite, I was actually more than ok with his death. I will definitely be buying the dvds.
I feel a similar slight animosity towards Borders and B&N like I do towards "sit down" chain restaurants. A lot of times the books are more expensive, especially in Borders, than the smaller, independent bookstores in my area. They tend to have a better selection of the books that I want (not necessarily scifi) and the atmosphere is a lot more inviting to me than the big chains. A great bookstore is one of my favorite places to be, so its sad that a lot of them have been struggling. Support local businesses!
@vamsikrishnagopikrishna: there was a flash of the sorcerer's lair overrun with water and you could see magical mops moving. so yes, it appears as if its based on the bit from Fantasia
I'm studying in Stockholm right now and spent a decent amount of time trying to scope out a good bookstore, especially one that carried scifi in Swedish or English. Some googling helped me find Science Fiction Bokhandeln in Gamla Stan, the oldest part of the city. Nothing is more awesome than walking down really old streets and finding a dragon attacking a spaceship. I was really amazed how huge the store was, and was able to find all the books I was looking for(although with Swedish prices, I wasn't able to buy too many). Its a must visit for Scifi or Fantasy book fans visiting Stockholm, Sweden!
@Im_your_Huckleberry: There's a chance she might be lost, for a few years at least. My younger cousins usually don't read books but have gotten sucked into Twilight. I would agree with the previous suggestion of Tamora Pierce(especially her excellent Lioness Quartet as a starter), Gail Carson Levine (her books are perfect for 10 year olds), and Patricia C. Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles. All of these authors write fantasy books with strong female heroines and plot lines that aren't just centered around romance.
You might also want to talk with her about what a healthy relationship actually looks like, otherwise you'll find her dating creepy, pale boys who stalk and control her. #firelight
