In the interview Gaeta reveals "some of the art, anime, and pop culture elements that combine to form Speed Racer's poptimistic photo-anime feel. The live action Speed Racer is saturated in a candy-colored palette so rich, audiences may just leave the theater with a contact sugar high."

And if you plan on seeing Speed Racer -- do yourself a favor and see it at a digital cinema or IMAX theater.

Javier Grillo-Marxuach had a great idea for a movie with secret agents, robots, aliens and talking monkeys. But had a tough time convincing his agents that it was worth pitching as a film or TV show, so he shelved it and went back to work writing for "Lost."

But then he couldn't help but tinker with it more and more and more and decided to go for it anyway. So he made it into a comic called The Middle Man and got a publisher interested. And ya know what? It got a good following and great reviews. He hired a girl to dress up as his main character and walk around Comic-Con to promote the comic. He created buzz on his blog. He put up art and kept his fans interested.

And eventually, he had a property that his agents couldn't argue with. And he just sold the comic idea for a TV show on ABC Family. So yeah, he did it on his terms, which is inspiring to the rest of us writers wanting to do something on our own.

The very first introduction I had to sci-fi happened to be the old school "Doctor Who" series with Tom Baker. The mix of British humor, crappy props and bizarre aliens hooked me from the very first episode.

There was never any sex or overt violence, so for parents truly nervous about that sort of thing, old school Doctor Who could be perfect.

Of course, kids today are pretty spoiled about wanting amazing visual effects, so they might smirk at K-9 and crew.
