Most hotels don't want this. They want to maximize their paid TV revenue. For example, when I was at a fancy resort last Thanksgiving, they had locked down all the inputs on the TV since they want you to pay for pay-per-view. When I ranted at them that my kid just wanted to watch her Dora video, they suggested I rent a CRT/DVD combo player for $$$ a night. Fortunately their fancy TV system used a VGA cable to hook up to the TV, so I just used my laptop to play my movies...
When I go to the movies its very expensive, not because of the tickets or even the food, but because of the babysitter.
If someone is talking a lot or worse pulls out a phone screen and starts texting, I'm not going to be quiet about it.
That said, if someone calls me during the movie and I hear it vibrate, I usually do peek to make sure its not the babysitter with a crisis. I've very careful not to make it visible. And yes it does happen... One time my 2 year old locked the babysitter out, police had to break down the door after kid had broken a glass container in the kitchen and cut himself on glass...
However, I disagree with all the people hating on kids at the movies. When I got to see whatever Shrek sequel is on, I bring my 2-3 yr old along for the show. It always has worked out fine, I don't bring a crying baby, I remind them to be quiet, etc. However, I'm much more tolerant of other noise of kids making trips to the bathroom etc.
As the author noted, I wouldn't do this at an evening or even late afternoon show! I go on a weekday afternoon or very early on the weekend when most of the rest of the audience will be people with young kids as well...
They do the Shrek show at 7, 8, or 9pm when most parents won't be bringing young kids!!!
This happened to me just this morning when reporting spotty data connectivity at a coffee shop that otherwise was showing 5 bars and 3G.
It's not surprising that data connectivity problems will cause the app to be unable to report the problem.
Of course, they should have thought of that and let you send the report later. Unfortunately, they didn't think of this obvious problem. Because when I got home just now and tried to fire up the app, it thinks I want to report a new problem, not finally send my old one...
@internetjunkee: LOL, I recognized a couple of the people and I was at MIT 1991-1995. Sure enough, digging through to the underlying page, it says 1995... I only remember one of their names, I'll have to pass it one in case he missed his Gizmodo debut... #mitwearablecomputingteam
"It's the most wonderful mouse you've ever used."
Ha, ha! A round mouse like those old DEC ones where its easy to get your hand positioned incorrectly! FAIL! :) #imac
@SacGamer: I think they are on the drugs that tell them that streaming online HD take off before Blu-Ray achieve DVD level adoption.
I'm not sure I'm quite ready to take those drugs yet, but they sure seem tempting.
Not sure I like apps that encourage people to use their phones during the movies... Yes, they made the screen dark to perhaps reduce the annoyance, but I hope anyone using it would go stand by the door before firing it up.
