@netriko: Predictable and straightforward are not mutually exclusive with good. I know that I came out of Avatar thinking, "That was Dances With Wolves in space; it's a good thing that Dances With Wolves was a good story."
Well, I know that I had become quite jaded and dissatisfied by the huge number of big budget, flashy, science fiction films where no one bothered to come up with a decent story. Then Avatar showed up and I figured I might as well see it because it's kind of fun to watch a crappy science fiction movie once in a while.
Imagine my utter and complete surprise to find that Avatar had a straightforward, understandable, and good story. Imagine, further, my surprise when looking back now I can remember the personality characteristics and development of many of the characters.
Of course, it certainly helps further that Avatar is incredibly pretty. So many movies, especially science fiction, tend to have such dark and muted color palettes. Sure gothic colors can portray certain motifs well but they aren't terribly nice on the eyes.
For consideration, please contrast the color palette with The Dark Knight. Also, contrast the story with either Transformers 2 or The Phantom Menace.
Richard Matheson's _I am Legend_ has a fantastic last line, "I am Legend."
It's so short and concise but it really hammers home Neville's full realization of the world that he lives in.
I was fortunate to have a father with an extensive collection of Andre Norton books; personally, I'm quite partial to Judgment on Janus and Victory on Janus.
I can't help but think that all the actors look a little young for their roles. I know the characters are all prodigies but that doesn't change that bureaucratic, naval-like organizations tend to require certain amounts of time to climb the organizational ladder.
