Gunnm - Battle Angel Alita
A jaded movie for a jaded audience. No subtlety, just video game puerility.
@capnrob: Typical simple-minded juvenile repost.
Just watched the long version again and think they should rename the movie, "The Day the Earth Turned Pompous and Bombastic". We're entering the age of "liberal" scolds, whose secret desire is the salvation of Gaea through the elimination of humanity.
The reliability of future imaginings does not in the least weaken the continuing appeal of classic futuristic novels such as PKD's iconic "Ubik" set in a fictional world of the 1990s as imagined in 1969.
One way to remove the fear of a Hellfire UAV is to turn it into a Hellfire TAV (Telepresent Aerial Vehicle). Developing a viable telepresence technology would keep the pilot in the loop.
I guess Mark Millar got his Physics PhD in string theory and high-energy physics in his spare time.
Mexican Cinema! Guillermo del Toro! Alfonso Cuarón! Alejandro González Iñárritu! Guillermo Arriaga! Now this!
They've swallowed an ominous, bitter-sweet tone poem and regurgitated a steaming, screaming bolus: a hectoring, self-righteous, CGI-infested screed on humanity receiving its long overdue obliteration at the hands of demonic alien stand-ins for tree-hugging know-it-alls.

Godzilla did a much better job at flattening civilization, and was a lot more fun. It was more subtle, too.

For a cool flat Earth story try "Missile Gap" by Charles Stross
I'm going to date myself, but I first saw TDTESS on an old 60s TV show called, "Saturday Night at the Theater". I was totally enthralled. It was scary, creepy, mysterious, beautiful and humorous all at once. No remake can replace that experience. I own a DVD of the movie and still watch TDTESS every once and a while. Having said this, may mind is not completely closed to a remake, even though Keanu Reeves is grossly overrated, and from viewing the trailers and outtakes on the web it seems Klaatu is the embodiment of a droning, grating, annoying, self-righteous, Gaia worshiping bad-boy wonk. Al Gore would have been much better in the role.

BTW, the original "Italian Job" is way better than the remake. As much as I like Mark Wahlberg, he doesn't hold a candle to Michael Caine. And the overwrought techno-vibe of the remake is no match for cheeky British humour.

My favorite "gendercidal" story is Cordwainer Smith's short story, "The Crime and the Glory of Commander Suzdal", where being female becomes carcinogenic. Here is the wikipedia link to a synopsis of the story: [en.wikipedia.org]
