Tolkien's (in)famous article, "On Faerie Stories," is really the definitive dissertation on so-called escapist literature and its human value (not to mention its venerable history). It comes highly recommended by this user. Contrary to LeGuin, Tolkien insists that the "mythologizing" impulse and the "escapist" impulse are often one and the same.
