Dood, I have to say you're on a role this weekend! I've really enjoyed reading all of your post. They're like a breath of fresh air when compared to stuff like the "50 best cleavage shots in Cos Play" stuff I'm accustomed to reading on the K. I love your perspective and angle on the video games and the industry in general! Keep doing your thing, and I'll keep reading! You are by far my favorite contributor on the site!
Hi Maggie!
Just read your article about games and art, and recalled an exhibition I just saw at arthouse, called Reset/Play - not sure if you've already heard of it:
I suppose it was put up for GDC, but I'm not sure. It was a mix of games being considered as art, and art being considered as games. The pieces that had a video game theme, but were purely audio/visual (and less 'interactive') were (to me) much more successful and approachable as art.
I guess that's why games like Ico and SotC appeal to so many people as art. It's entertainment, but you're not being entertained purely by as many visual effects and interaction as you are visual technique and perhaps messaging.
Keep up the great work - love your articles!
That isn't a Zero Punctuation knockoff. The Gamestop one was, but the other guy's been around a lot longer than Zero Punctuation.
Just because some Gamestop guy did it doesn't mean we have to jump at every flash animation and accuse it of being less than it is. How do you know Zero Punctuation didn't steal the idea from him?
Love your stuff, Maggie. Keep it up, keep it smart.
Just wanted to add one more note of support for all the awesome items you post. The academic and cultural sides of gaming never get old to read about, and it's interesting to see how people are approaching this genre to get something out of it.
Between you and Owen, the Kotaku Weekend Edition is simply outstanding.
I really enjoy your sociological/anthropological post; intellectual sans condescending. You're post never fail to get me to put down the DS3 to do some thinking.
Get well soon Maggie! Your posts are some of the best on the site!
Maggie.. I just wanted you to know I find your posts the most thoughtful reads on this site these days. Especially in regards to your continued insight of the industry. Kudos to you! :)
"if my house is on fire, after I get the dog out, I'm heading for my antique prints and non-antique 'special collection' books & flinging as many as I can out the window to relative safety!"
think of the spines!
You used the Communist Manifesto as a picture.
*claps*
Hey Maggie,
I really enjoy your academic and intellectual posts on games and game design, and just wanted to show some support.
Keep up the good work!
As a (hopeful) academic in China studies, I dig your coverage. Keep up the good work!
Hi Maggie,
Glad you are keeping your high standard of work going :)
Would you do me the honour of adding you to XBL in the hopes of playing a match online at some point in the future!
Shaun =)
Your posts always indicate of your current status in grad school and it seems like you always have such a large workload. I am curious to know what you're working towards, and I ask nicely because games and academia have recently caught my interests, and want to know what sort of work you do, and what the ultimate end result (the one you want, anyway) will be.
I just want to say: both you and your stories are awesome. Keep it up and never leave Kotaku!
Hey, Maggie.
I really like how you choose stories about political issues and gender issues involving video games. It's not that I don't like the other stuff, too, but I really thing it's awesome to have such a broad scope of topics on Kotaku! Keep it up!
Just out of curiosity, what degree were/are you in the process of obtaining? Rather, what field are you studying?
Maggie, I have to say, I'm a big fan of the stories you pick and your writing style. Keep up the awesome work.
-J.
Are you a Xenosaga Freak as well? Amazing avatar btw!
