<![CDATA[lukeoneil47 commented on So, Yankee Stadium Takes This No Moving During "God Bless America"-Thing Rather Seriously]]> I had a pretty awful experience at a Patriots game two years back when my friend and I didn't feel like standing to honor the troops or some jingoistic bullshit that was going on at halftime. They were inducting a group of local kids into the marines or something.

Oh boy! Yay! Go America number one!

Granted, I'm a douche, but we didn't make a scene, we just sat there peacefully. You would have thought we had set an American flag on fire and shoved it up a bald eagle's ass the way people in our section hated us. Since when does being a sports fan require me to become a nationalist?

Oh right, since forever.

]]>
<![CDATA[lukeoneil47 commented on Why Alice Ain't Married Anymore]]> I am oddly compelled by these movies, despite their reliance on ever single zombie cliche in the book. There is something so awesome about super powered sci ninja babe vs. zombies that all of the films' flaws melt away.

i've never played the games, but i'm interested in knowing more about the backstory of the film universe.

<![CDATA[lukeoneil47 commented on The Mist's True Horror Exists Only In Bernie Wrightson's Mind]]> so we have no concept of why the fog just passed, right? did the creatures disappear with it? how did the military contain it? how would they even deal with something like that giant monster?

]]>
<![CDATA[lukeoneil47 commented on The Mist's True Horror Exists Only In Bernie Wrightson's Mind]]> Thanks for your further thoughts on the ending guys.

As for the "giving up" thing, eliel, you have a point. But I don't think anyone takes into consideration what an extraordinary situation this is. It is nothing like any of us have ever, or will ever, or anyone ever has had to deal with in the history of the world. It isn't fighting a group of bad guys off to save your family, it isn't struggling through the wilderness trying to find shelter, it isn't hiding from an invading army, or searching for food for your children in a post apocalyptic world... it is: the world is taken over my demons from another dimension and there is no hope of seeing them, nevermind stopping them, before they eat you in a horrible, horrible fashion. An agonizing, torturous death.

Contrast it to the Road, for example, where the father does everything in his power to protect his son. he's dealing with some fucked up shit, and some tough customers, but they're still only humans at the end of the day. Murderous, cannibalistic humans, sure, but humans all the same. Not behemoths the size of a skyscraper roaming the planet. I think giving up in that situation is acceptable. Maybe that's just me. I don't have kids, by the way.

Not sure why this movie gets me going so much.

]]>
<![CDATA[lukeoneil47 commented on The Mist's True Horror Exists Only In Bernie Wrightson's Mind]]> A lot of people can't take the ending because they get worked up about the precious life of a fucking child. The suicide made perfect sense, and I would most certainly rather shoot my entire family in the head than watch them eaten by demonic bugs from another dimension.

the fog rolling back seconds later was, however, silly. they could have easily remedied that by giving us some sense that a significant length of time had passed, even a few hours.

<![CDATA[lukeoneil47 commented on Has SciFi Finally Worked Its Way To Hollywood's Big Kids Table?]]> The urge to segregate comic books from speculative fiction from fantasy from related animation styles etc reminds me of the infighting between varying identity politics factions in the left wing. both do a disservice to the greater whole.

if you want websites that focus specifically on one particular corner of the genre-fiction world, by all means go to them, write them, read them. but i think it's pretty obvious by this point that i09 casts a broad net -- and thankfully too, or else I wouldn't read it -- because over specialization certainly isn't going to help them with their page views. If I had one complaint it would be that they do the opposite of what some people seem to be suggesting, and make the site officially broader on its face, so that the inclusion of comic books and fantasy was just taken as a matter of fact and not a complaint-worthy aberration

truth is there is a lot of overlap in the audiences.

<![CDATA[lukeoneil47 commented on ESPN Is Giving Jemele Hill Some Quiet Time]]> About the Boston as racist stuff that I always seen thrown around on sites like this... How is that we're both the bastion of lefties, the gay-marrying state, Ted Kennedy liberals, Cambridge communists and so on... but also perceived as a backwards racist area?

Not to be too sensitive about it. Lived here most of my life, (with stints in DC and NYC) and it strikes me that retarded, drunken sports fans in any city don't do a good job of representing the citizens as a whole.

Not to say that racist jokes and simplified caricatures aren't funny, because I certainly use them myself.

<![CDATA[lukeoneil47 commented on Have Superhero Movies Killed The Summer Movie Season?]]> "stop whining" seems to be an extremely common and wonderfully useless reaction to any article that someone doesn't agree with and it crops up here in the comment section of most sites like this with frustrating regularity.

which is said not to defend the premise of this article. while the writer may well believe his premise, it's obviously a product of the contrarian streak running through journalism now. the point of the argument is the existence of the argument. if an argument can be made, it is. there is an awful lot of space to fill. you'll see that same problem plague some of the posts on this site as well.

<![CDATA[lukeoneil47 commented on A Childless World Turns To A Sewer -- Hopefully Without Hair-Flipping]]> The most extraordinary thing about the film -- from a sci fi character perspective -- is how unremarkable Clive Owen's character is. Remind me again what exactly was leftist about the film? That fascism is bad? Immigrants are humans too? Those things seem pretty self evidently bipartisan to me.

]]>
<![CDATA[lukeoneil47 commented on Prequels Aren't Just Dumb, They're Evil]]> Purposefully contrarian post.

The Star Wars prequels happened to suck because of the acting and the dialog, not because we already knew what happened to Darth Vader. That's one of the most ridiculous things I've heard. It wreaks of the odious NO SPOILERS culture. As if simply knowing the framework of plot points and connecting the dots is the reason we watch films. It's supposed to be about seeing how the decisions that characters make over time bring about change, and watching things develop.

To use a cliche, it's not the destination, it's the journey.
