Actually, this guy was first. Check out his Youtube videos. Also there was a whole discussion on Reddit like a year ago that turned into an argument about creative property rights, and then the Hexbug owner's son chimed in and it got interesting. He's also supposedly trying to build a large scale version of this thing that a human can ride in.
Perhaps he goes through a transformation throughout the film. The Comic-Con footage might be his final look, while the concept art is a mid-transformation. That would be cool if he slowly lost his humanity as the film progressed.
I think they'll solve this problem with cinematography. It's all about camera angles and lens usage, and of course editing. Wally Pfister is Nolan's cinematographer. The dude won an Oscar for Inception and was nominated three times prior, so he knows what he's doing.
