I think that these SF books prove the point that technology advancement is slowing down. Things were changing so fast in the early to mid 1900's that people extrapolated that out to the end of the century. To go from horses to cars to planes in 50-60 years was a huge jump. If I lived back then I would have assumed we would be flying Jetson-mobiles around by 2000 too. Its sort of disappointing actually. Perhaps we have hit a technological wall.
