I use mine to keep my laptop cool during the day and after it's absorbed all the heat I can use it for a hot water bottle at night :-)

(Mostly true, by the way - see here: [digitalcomposting.wordpress.com]
Last I checked - about a month ago - friggin' Charles Schwab (www.schwab.com) didn't allow any passwords greater than 8 characters. Seems like a huge security flaw for a place that a lot of people may keep a huge portion of their investments...
Well then you'd better not read the article :-)
really - ten CENTS was a deal-breaker for you? My time is worth enough that a super-fast super-easy process that costs me a few pennies easily outweighs getting a cable out and doing a manual transfer. Which was and still is free.
Bacteria can be killed by a high temperature over a short period of time or a lower temperature over a longer period of time. So there's not necessarily a 'safe' temperature unless you also take into account the amount of time.
anybody ever seen a tool that can instruct your mac to ignore a section of the trackpad? Fat fingers or whatever, but I'd love to explicitly create a 'dead zone' along one side or the bottom.
Yup, it's awesome - which only makes me want it on OSX even more! :-)
Not going to make any decisions about changing mail clients until I see what Lion brings...
If only reeder (or anybody, really) would offer a robust offline mode where I can pre-cache articles AND images from my feeds before I hop on a plane. I miss google gears!
HDR my ass. Seriously Giz, you should read the comments on posts before re-linking to them in some sort of 'best of' section. This ain't HDR - it's just some crappy image processing. They fooled you and you look foolish for buying into it. Meanwhile they're raking in the cash from stupid people buying this app. You've set a new low for bad reporting here.
Also, I do not think 'literally' means what the author thinks it does either...
they've got plugs in europe, you know :-) Seriously, unless you're going to be doing long multi-day hikes or something I'd just carry a euro-spec plug. No need for a 220-110 converter, pretty much all transformers these days can handle dual voltage.
I've been using a hot water bottle for years as a laptop stand. Perfect way to dissipate heat and at the same time provide a bit of density between EM radiation from the laptop and one's precious bits. Blogpost on it here: [bit.ly]
@Geeksnap: Yeah, it does seem to be getting better, which makes io9's mention of it all the more jarring since I consider Cyriaque to be 'one of us' in terms of insider geekness :-)
Isn't it about time that Joe Hill, a really fantastic writer, is allowed to be mentioned without an explanation of who he happens to be related to?
Agree with what the article says, but nonetheless I'm glad to see the amount of press that Venter's work garnered. Let's get society comfortable with the idea now so that when later breakthroughs come along people won't freak out unnecessarily - they will already be comfortable with the idea...
after you do cold equations you should followup with 'think like a dinosaur' - a sort of homage to the former in many ways.
how big a file can I send?
Awesome write-up for an awesome book. Zelazny's a favorite and I just reread this about a year ago and was still hugely entertained. I think you're exactly right - that Zelazny practically defined a genre with his mixing (here and elsewhere) of myth with modern.
Yeah, it seems like a nice hybrid drive where I could put OS & Apps on the SSD would make a lot of sense and still be cost-effective. What am I missing?
