I agree with some of the other commenters down below. I am an atheist but still really enjoyed this finale. I think it was a great endcap--especially the symmetry of the ending shot close up of Jack's eye.
What did I really want? The show has always about the characters to me. The mysteries and sci-fi stuff just made it cool. So what I wanted was NOT answers to the mysteries. I wanted things to be open ended in that regard. What I really wanted was for the characters to get their happy endings. I'm a realist, so I realize that life isn't fair and we don't get happy endings. That didn't stop me from wanting it though. The sideways world was really the only way to do that effectively without changing the reality of the island. It was all "yea! everyone is reuniting". I loved it and cried like a baby. But I've also got a freaking ton of pregnancy hormones running through me, so there's that.
This ending was satisfying to me. Much better than BSG or any Matrix sequel.
@Sam Brady: by enough suckling, you can get a non-pregnant woman to lactate--heck you could get a man to as well. It's all about demand causing increased hormones (oxytocin)
@leftatmars: I thought that he was trying to keep the fact of his trip to Australia (hence being in the airport) on the DL. Otherwise, he'd have been tied up in paperwork and Miles would have been all "you said you were in Palm Springs!!" prior to this episode
@kari.palishen: For real! I thought when Claire invited her to join her in the hole that it was shanking time. Didn't she just tell Jin that Kate was going to get killed for taking Aaron?? But she doesn't instantly take the first opportunity? bwah?
@Kid_Bitchin: this is my whole problem with it. Apple thinking it will cut into Kindle's business. The reason I'm an avid Kindle reader is specifically because of the e-ink. It looks like a book. It doesn't cause me eye strain. Go Kindle! If I wanted to read material on a computer interface, I'd just use my laptop. Me and the old-fogey book-loving population are not going to jump ship for your "colors" and "fancy pictures".
WAY too much Gene Wolfe (too tedious to be considered that awesome).
1984 should be in the top 5
Hyperion series should be in top 10
George RR Martin is getting ripped off at 19.
Arthur C Clark--Childhood's End or Songs from Distant Earth should have made the cut!
@Charlie Jane Anders:
If you can include biblical armageddon fantasy (which I hear encompasses Book of Eli as well as Legion), then Roman gods should get their due. And obviously, you are forgetting Bubo the mechanical owl--if mechanical birds aren't robots, then what is??
I heart Ridley Scott, but people should just leave Brave New World alone. I am cringing thinking about how Demolition Man harvested its ideas...poorly.
